==== Мир?

(Lady Jane Grey)

Mysterious painting loaned to Bedfordshire stately home could be 'Nine Days Queen' Lady Jane Gre
A mysterious portrait of a woman now on public display could be the only painting of Lady Jane Grey painted before she was executed, according to research.
Lady Jane was Queen of England for just nine days, from July 10 to July 19, 1553, and was proclaimed Queen as part of an unsuccessful bid to prevent the accession of her Catholic cousin, Mary Tudor.
The portrait that was on display at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire, for 200 years, was sold but has now been loaned back to Wrest indefinitely.
English Heritage said research, including dendrochronology (tree ring dating) and infra-red reflectography, has provided “compelling evidence” to confirm that the portrait depicts Lady Jane.
Analysis suggests this could be a portrait of Lady Jane Grey before she was executed
Credit: English Heritage/PA
Rachel Turnbull from English Heritage said: “English Heritage has undertaken remarkable research in an effort to determine the identity of this portrait.
“While we can’t confirm that this is definitely Lady Jane Grey, our results certainly make a compelling argument."
Existing depictions and the few known representations of Lady Jane – including The Execution of Lady Jane Grey - are all known to have been painted after her death.
Lady Jane was executed on Tower Green at the Tower of London on 12 February 1554, at the age of just 17.
English Heritage said analysis of the panel upon which the woman is painted – comprised of two Baltic oak boards from two different trees – suggests a likely usage date for the panel between 1539 and about 1571.
The back of the panel also displays a merchant or cargo mark, which according to some could be a tell-tale clue.
"One of the crucial things is there's a merchant's mark on the back of the panel," said curator Peter Moore.
"That same mark has been found on the panel of a portrait of Edward VI and that is really tantalising evidence that this is by the same royal portrait painter," he added.

Lord Guildford Dudley
was
the second youngest surviving son
of John Dudley, later Duke of Northumberland
and his wife, Jane Guildford.
The Dudley lineage
goes back
to a family called Sutton.
In the early 14th century,
they became the lords of Dudley Castle,
from whom Guildford descended through his paternal grandfather.
This was
Edmund Dudley, a councillor of Henry VII,
who, in 1510,
after the accession of Henry VIII, was executed.
Through his father's mother,
Elizabeth Grey, 6th Baroness Lisle,
Guildford descended from
the Hundred Years War
heroes,
Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick, and
John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury
Under the young King Edward VI,
Guildford's father John Dudley
became
Lord President of the Council
and de facto ruled England from 1550 to 1553.
The chronicler Richard Grafton, who knew him,
described Guildford as "a comely, virtuous and goodly gentleman".
In 1552 Northumberland unsuccessfully tried to arrange a marriage
between Guildford and Margaret Clifford.
Instead, in the spring of 1553,
Guildford was engaged
to the sixteen-year-old Jane Grey.
Jane Grey and Margaret Clifford
were both great-granddaughters of King Henry VII,
but Jane figured higher in the line of succession.
On 25 May 1553,
three weddings
were celebrated at Durham Place,
the Duke of Northumberland's town mansion.
1). Guildford married Jane;
2). his sister Katherine married Henry Hastings, the Earl of Huntingdon's heir; and
3) Jane's sister Katherine married Lord Herbert, the heir of the Earl of Pembroke.
It was a magnificent festival,
on 25 May 1553,
three (3) weddings
with jousts, games, and masques.
For the latter,
two different companies had been booked,
one male, one female.
The Venetian and French ambassadors
were guests,
and there were
"large numbers of the common people ...
and of the most principal of the realm".
Guildford and some others
suffered an attack of food poisoning,
because of
"a mistake made by a cook, who plucked one leaf for another".
Lady Jane Grey,
also known as
Lady Jane Dudley
after her marriage,
and nicknamed as the "Nine Days Queen",
was
an English noblewoman
who was proclaimed Queen of England and Ireland
on 10 July 1553
and reigned
until she was deposed by her cousin, Mary I,
on 19 July 1553.
1553
1554
around 7 February,
the British (Englis) government (in London)
decided to execute
Jane (British Royalty Princess) ,
(b. 1536 or 1537 - d. 12th February 1554
(aged 16 or 17))
and her husband
Lord Guildford Dudley , ( (also spelt Guilford) (b. c.;1535 – d. 12 February 1554)
(aged 17-18-19-20)
*whom having been declared the heir of King Edward VI, from English Royalty line ))
for high treason,
of which
they had both
been found guilty.
It troubled
English British
Catholic Chistian
Queen Mary to let her cousin die,
but she accepted the Privy Council's advice.
Bishop Gardiner pressed for the young couple's execution
in a court sermon, and
the Imperial ambassador
Simon Renard
was happy to report that
"Jane of Suffolk and her husband
are to lose their heads."
The day before their executions,
Guildford asked Jane for a last meeting, which she refused,
explaining it "would only ... increase their misery and pain, it was better to put it off
... as they would meet shortly elsewhere, and live bound by indissoluble ties."
Around ten o'clock in the morning of 12 February,
Guildford
was led towards Tower Hill,
where "many ... gentlemen" waited to shake hands with him.
Guildford made a short speech to the assembled crowd, as was customary.
"Having no ghostly father with him", he knelt, prayed,
and asked the people to pray for him,
"holding up his eyes and hands to God many times".
Guildford was killed with one stroke of the axe,
after which his body was conveyed on a cart to the Tower chapel of St Peter ad Vincula.
Watching the scene from her window,
Lady Jane Grey exclaimed:
"Oh, Guildford, Guildford!"
Lord Guildford Grey was buried in the chapel with Jane Grey, his spouse, his wife,
who was dead within the hour.

Biography
The prestige of the Blount family
had been enhanced by George Blount’s father,
a member of the royal household from Henry VIII’s accession,
and by his sister, Elizabeth,
who bore the King his son the Duke of Richmond.
Sir John Blount’s marriage had brought with it lands in Staffordshire,
and both father and son were to be sheriffs of that county as well as Shropshire. 3
On his father’s death in 1531
George Blount was immediately appointed to the stewardship of Bewdley and Cleobury Mortimer which his father and grandfather had held, and if he had been a year or two older he might have replaced his father as a Shropshire County member in the Commons.
Although we do not know who was by-elected, it cannot have been Blount, for in that case the situation which arose in the spring of 1536 could not have occurred.
At that election the King asked for the return of the previous Members;
if Blount had been one of them his re-election would have been a foregone conclusion, yet not only was he not elected, but his mother had campaigned (albeit unsuccessfully) for him, which she need not have done for a sitting Member. That there was a seat to be competed for at all in 1536 is to be explained only by the supposition that whoever had replaced John Blount in the previous Parliament had himself died, or been incapacitated, towards its close, for Blount’s fellow-Member in 1529 Sir Thomas Cornwall had survived the Parliament and was almost certainly re-elected in deference to the King’s wish.
The younger Blount’s prospect of filling the vacancy may have appeared good:
in 1535 his sister married John Talbot of Albrighton, whom Cromwell appears to have had in mind earlier as the replacement, and in the same year the Duke of Richmond paid a visit to Shrewsbury. Blount’s mother was indeed to claim, in her account of the election to Cromwell, that the ‘worshipful’ of the shire were in favour of him and that it was only the sheriff’s decision to hold the election at Shrewsbury, where there was plague, which enabled the townsmen to stage a riot on behalf of his rival Trentham (probably Richard Trentham) who carried the day. 4
Whether Blount tried again for the county in 1539 we do not know, but if so he was again passed over, although he could have sat for Wenlock whose Members are unknown. He may have been successful in 1542, when the names of the Shropshire knights are lost, but during the second session in 1543 he obtained a proviso in the Act of Union with Wales (34 and 35 Hen. VIII, c.26) safeguarding his two stewardships; in 1545 and again in 1547 he took the first place. By then he had grown both in age and stature.
A gentleman pensioner since 1540, he had been knighted at Leith by the Earl of Hertford in 1544 when captaining a ship in the admiral’s fleet against Scotland. The admiral was John Dudley, Viscount Lisle, whom Blount was to serve in later campaigns, notably in the summer of 1549 when, after being summoned to join Dudley, now Earl of Warwick, on the Scottish border with 200 footmen, he was diverted to the expedition against the Norfolk rebels, of which he was made muster master. At the funeral of Henry VIII he carried the banner of St. Edmund. His religious attitude in later life suggests that he cannot have welcomed the doctrinal changes of the following reign, but his career in local administration involved him in their consequences: to his membership of the benches of Shropshire and Worcestershire he added service on the commissions for chantries and church goods.
Like his patron he may have favoured any changes which enriched the laity.
That he continued to stand well with Dudley is suggested by his receipt in July 1550 of lands in Shropshire forfeited by Thomas, Baron Seymour of Sudeley, his possible appointment to the council in the marches during Dudley’s presidency, and most clearly by his shrievalty of Staffordshire in the last year of the reign.
Whether in this last capacity Blount was excluded from the Parliament of March 1553 is by no means certain.
He was still sheriff six months later when Mary called her first Parliament, to which he was returned for Bridgnorth, a borough outside the jurisdiction of his shrievalty but within his sphere of influence: if he had sat in the previous Parliament, it was not for Bridgnorth or any other Shropshire borough, for the names of all their Members are known, but he could have done so for one of the many boroughs where this is not the case.
What does seem to be clear is that on both occasions he used his position as sheriff to influence the choice of the knights for Staffordshire and thereby annoyed Henry, Lord Stafford, who had expected to see his son Henry Stafford returned. 5
What part, if any, Blount played in the succession crisis of 1553 is not known: as sheriff it would have been his duty to proclaim the new Queen, but he may not have been there to do so.
That he retained a personal attachment to the family of his fallen patron is shown by his appointment, with (Sir) Henry Sidney, as a trustee of the Duchess of Northumberland’s will. It may also have been a connexion with former friends in the Dudley entourage who had fled abroad which led him to join in the opposition to a government bill in 1555, but this gesture apart Blount appears to have done nothing either within or outside Parliament suggestive of discontent with the new regime.
A Member of all but one of Mary’s Parliaments,
he neither ‘stood for the true religion’
in the first of them nor ‘seceded’ from the third.
His only recorded summons before the Privy Council
was for some irregularity in his stewardship of Wyre forest, near Bewdley. 6
Under Elizabeth,
Blount’s Catholicism proved no handicap,
perhaps because of the Queen’s generosity towards the relatives of her father’s mistresses.
His wife, however, became an encumbrance,
and during the 1570s he chose to live apart from her.
A quarrel with his daughter over her marriage led to his disinheriting her in favour of a nephew, Roland Lacon.
Blount died on 20 July 1581,
and his daughter’s efforts to reverse the settlement of his property were unsuccessful."

Catherine of Aragon (16 December 1485, Spain - 7 January 1536 (aged 50), England)
Spouses
1. Arthur, Prince of Wales (19/20 September 1486 – 2 April 1502 (aged 15)) ;(m. 1501; died 1502);
*Plans for Arthur's marriage began before his third birthday. At the age of eleven, he was formally betrothed to Catherine of Aragon, a daughter of the powerful Catholic Monarchs in Spain.
On 14 November 1501, they were married at Old St. Paul's Cathedral, both 15 years old.
In March 1502, Arthur and Catherine were afflicted by an unknown illness, "a malign vapour which proceeded from the air." It has been suggested that this illness was the mysterious English sweating sickness, tuberculosis ("consumption"), plague or influenza. While Catherine recovered, Arthur died on 2 April 1502 at Ludlow, six months short of his sixteenth birthday.
Arthur died on 2 April 1502; 16-year-old Catherine recovered to find herself a widow.
At this point, Henry VII faced the challenge of avoiding the obligation to return her 200,000-ducat dowry, half of which he had not yet received, to her father, as required by her marriage contract should she return home.
It was agreed that Catherine would marry Henry VII's second son, Henry, Duke of York, who was five years younger than she was. The death of Catherine's mother, however, meant that her "value" in the marriage market decreased. She had little money and struggled to cope, as she had to support her ladies-in-waiting as well as herself. In 1507 she served as the Spanish ambassador to England, the first female ambassador in European history.
Marriage to Arthur's brother depended on the Pope granting a dispensation because canon law forbade a man to marry his brother's widow. Catherine testified that her marriage to Arthur was never consummated as, also according to canon law, a marriage could be dissolved if it was not consummated.
Shortly after Arthur's death, the idea of betrothing the widowed Catherine to the new heir apparent, Henry, had arisen; Henry VII and Isabella I were keen on moving forward with the betrothal and the pope granted a dispensation towards that end. Henry VIII ascended the throne on 22 April 1509 and married Arthur's widow on 11 June 1509, 7 years after Arthur's death.
2. Henry VIII of England ;(m. 1509; ann. 1533)
Catherine's second wedding took place on 11 June 1509, seven years after Prince Arthur's death. She married Henry VIII, who had only just acceded to the throne, in a private ceremony in the church of the Observant Friars outside Greenwich Palace. She was 23 years of age.
Coronation. Coronation of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon
On Saturday 23 June 1509, the traditional eve-of-coronation procession to Westminster Abbey was greeted by a large and enthusiastic crowd. As was the custom, the couple spent the night before their coronation at the Tower of London. On Midsummer's Day, Sunday, 24 June 1509, Henry VIII and Catherine were anointed and crowned together by the Archbishop of Canterbury at a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The coronation was followed by a banquet in Westminster Hall. Many new Knights of the Bath were created in honour of the coronation. In that month that followed, many social occasions presented the new Queen to the English public. She made a fine impression and was well received by the people of England
The couple's surviving child was Mary I (b. 1516), the daughter.

The King's great matter
The Trial of Queen Catherine of Aragon, by Henry Nelson O'Neil (1846–1848)
In 1525, Henry VIII became enamoured of Anne Boleyn, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine; Anne was between ten and seventeen years younger than Henry, being born between 1501 and 1507. Henry began pursuing her; Catherine was no longer able to bear children by this time. Henry began to believe that his marriage was cursed and sought confirmation from the Bible, which he interpreted to say that if a man marries his brother's wife, the couple will be childless
In 1526, Henry started to pursue the affections of Anne Boleyn. At the same time, he became troubled by what became known as the King's "great matter", that is, finding an appropriate solution for his lack of male descendants. It soon became the King's wish to dissolve his marriage and marry Anne, who was more likely to bear children.
in 1531, Catherine was banished from court, and her old rooms were given to Anne Boleyn.
Henry married Anne Boleyn in a secret ceremony.
Henry refused her the right to any title but "Dowager Princess of Wales" in recognition of her position as his brother's widow.
Catherine went to live at The More Castle, Hertfordshire, late in 1531. After that, she was successively moved to the Royal Palace of Hatfield, Hertfordshire (May to September 1532), Elsyng Palace, Enfield (September 1532 to February 1533), Ampthill Castle, Bedfordshire (February to July 1533) and Buckden Towers, Cambridgeshire (July 1533 to May 1534). She was then finally transferred to Kimbolton Castle, Cambridgeshire where she confined herself to one room, which she left only to attend Mass, dressed only in the hair shirt of the Franciscans, and fasted continuously.
While she was permitted to receive occasional visitors, she was forbidden to see her daughter Mary. They were also forbidden to communicate in writing,
but sympathisers discreetly conveyed letters between the two.
Henry offered both mother and daughter better quarters and permission to see each other if they would acknowledge Anne Boleyn as the new queen; both refused.
In late December 1535,
sensing her death was near, Catherine made her will,
and wrote
to her nephew, the Emperor Charles V,
asking him to protect her daughter (later Mari I of England).
It has been claimed that Catherine then penned one final letter to Henry:
" My most dear lord, king and husband,
The hour of my death now drawing on, the tender love I owe you
forceth me, my case being such, to commend myself to you, and to put
you in remembrance with a few words of the health and safeguard of
your soul which you ought to prefer before all worldly matters, and
before the care and pampering of your body, for the which you have
cast me into many calamities and yourself into many troubles. For my
part, I pardon you everything, and I wish to devoutly pray God that He
will pardon you also. For the rest, I commend unto you our daughter
Mary, beseeching you to be a good father unto her, as I have
heretofore desired. I entreat you also, on behalf of my maids, to give
them marriage portions, which is not much, they being but three. For all
my other servants I solicit the wages due them, and a year more, lest
they be unprovided for. Lastly, I make this vow, that mine eyes desire
you above all things.
Katharine the Quene. "
The authenticity of the letter itself has been questioned,
but not Catherine's attitude in its wording,
which has been reported with variations in different sources.
Catherine
died at Kimbolton Castle
on 7 January 1536.
The following day, news of her death reached the King.
At the time there were rumours that she was poisoned,
possibly by Gregory di Casale.
According to the chronicler Edward Hall,
Anne Boleyn wore yellow for the mourning, which has been interpreted in various ways;
Polydore Vergil interpreted this to mean that Anne did not mourn.
Chapuys reported that it was King Henry who decked himself in yellow,
celebrating the news
and making a great show of his and Anne's daughter, Elizabeth,
to his courtiers.
This was seen as distasteful and vulgar by many.
Another theory
is that the dressing in yellow
was out of respect for Catherine
as yellow was said to be the Spanish colour of mourning.
On the day of Catherine's funeral, Anne Boleyn miscarried a male child.
Rumours then circulated that Catherine had been poisoned by Anne or Henry, or both.
The rumours were born after the apparent discovery during her embalming that there was a black growth on her heart that might have been caused by poisoning.
Modern medical experts are in agreement that her heart's discolouration was due not to poisoning, but to cancer, something which was not understood at the time.
Catherine was buried in Peterborough Cathedral with the ceremony due to her position as a Dowager Princess of Wales, and not a queen.
Henry did not attend the funeral
and forbade Mary,
their both daughter Mary , Princess Mary,
daughter, Mary (18 February 1516 - 17 November 1558), future Queen Mary I of England ,
Mary I of England (1516 - 1558), future Queen of England (1553-1558)
to attend her mother Catherine of Aragon 's funeral too.
