In 2011, in the UK, several women went to court together after breaking up with their husbands and boyfriends. They did not try to divide the property or get alimony. The point was different: the men had cruelly deceived them, and the government was behind them. It turned out that the husbands and boyfriends of the women were undercover police officers, spending years on surveillance rather than fighting the real criminals. <url> dealt with a story that lasted more than ten years, which sounds like the ravings of a paranoid patient, but turned out to be the pure truth.

How Scotland Yard Officers Pretended to be Perfect Boyfriends
Helen Steele was about 20 years old when John Barker came into her life. He quickly became close to the girl, swore eternal love and talked about wanting to spend the rest of their lives together and have children. Helen reciprocated his feelings. They moved in together, often walked around the countryside and looked after the cottage in which they were going to build their dream future.

I've never felt such intense love for someone before. Although we had a few fights, John and I were blissfully happy.

Two years have passed, and the ideal boyfriend has begun to change. Barker began to complain to Steele about psychological problems, saying that he loved her, but could not continue the relationship, saying that he needed time to sort himself out. For six months he had been disappearing from her life, then returning.

It all ended in 1992. Barker wrote a letter to Helen that he was going to South Africa. "I was desperate, I was crazy with worry for him, but there was nothing I could do about it. I fell apart and cried uncontrollably," Steele confessed. She couldn't accept the man's departure and decided to learn more about him.

That's when she discovered that John Barker never existed.

Over the years, Steele had been in contact with John Dines, a police officer from Scotland Yard. Steele wasn't the love of his life, she was just another one of his surveillance jobs. In fact, the man was married and was just using a Steele.

Helen continued to dig and was surprised to find out that she was far from the only victim of a double agent.

The women themselves revealed the deception of the police
In September 2002, Donna McLean met Carlo Neri. They immediately became inseparable, and soon he proposed to her.

The couple was already planning children when the man suddenly left McLean in 2004. Moreover, the explanation was still the same: unsolvable psychological problems.

10 years later, Maclean discovered that Neri was leading a double life. To her, he was carpenter Carlo Neri, and to the police chief, Officer Carlo Soracchi.

Kate Wilson faced the same situation. She found out about the deception of ex-boyfriend Mark Stone thanks to her friend Lisa Jones. She started dating Stone after her friend moved to Europe.

In 2010, the couple was on vacation. Jones was left alone in the car and opened the glove compartment to get her sunglasses. But instead, she accidentally came across a passport with a photo of her lover. In the NAME column it was written: Mark Kennedy. He had a child. At that time, Jones had been in a relationship with him for five years.

It felt like one of my best friends had died, and I missed him terribly. All I wanted to do was talk to him and tell him about all this madness. Except that all this madness was him.

In 2000, the seemingly beautiful story of Alison Smith and Mark Cassidy ended almost the same way. He suddenly abandoned the woman and ran away, leaving a note: "We want different things. I can't get over it."

Smith revealed his real identity using a credit card in the name of M. Jenner. One day, a woman found it in her boyfriend's jacket pocket. Then he claimed that he had bought the card from a stranger in a pub as a joke.

Police officers approached women of oppositional views for the sake of the country's security
The Court is aware of at least 50 such victims. All of them have one thing in common — connections with various protest groups. Smith was actively involved in trade union and anti-fascist activities, Wilson was a civic activist, Jones advocated for environmental reform, McLean attended anti-war demonstrations, and Steele was known for the "McCluskey case."

Steele became famous in eco-activist circles after the McDonald's corporation accused her of defamation and sued. The reason was a leaflet in which she claimed that the corporation pays its employees too little, harms the environment and mistreats animals necessary for the corporation to produce food. In 2005, the European Court of Human Rights recognized Steele's correctness.

All of these women were targeted by Scotland Yard for their oppositional views. Kennedy, Jenner, Dines, and others involved in the case were members of a secret unit of the London police, whose officers specifically engaged in relationships with female activists to prevent them from protesting.

The history of this Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) began in 1968. Then, on March 17, 25,000 people came out to the US Embassy demanding that they not help America fight the Vietnam War. The rally ended in a violent clash between British police and protesters. Conservative members of parliament and the press loyal to them began actively promoting the idea that the protests were political radicalism that could destroy the country.

After suppressing the protests, the Ministry of the Interior and the London Police decided to prevent future actions and created the SDS. Initially, its members were supposed to fight only anti-war groups, but in the 1970s they began to infiltrate protest organizations of various kinds.

The agents followed the same instructions to gain the trust of the women.
From 1968 to 2011, SDS officers and the National Public Order Protection Unit (NPOIU) monitored members of about a thousand political groups. At least 25 of them not only joined organizations, but also began romantic relationships with activists, married and had children with them. Most of the police officers were married, and their real wives were often unaware of what was happening.

Many agents adopted the names of their deceased children. They all followed roughly the same story: they introduced themselves as workers and said that they either had no relatives, or they lived far away, or did not communicate with them. It made it easier for them to lie to their victims.

They periodically convinced the women that they were going abroad on business, but in fact they were visiting Scotland Yard and spending time with their real family. The police tried to be ideal partners, supported the activists in everything, and then suddenly disappeared, citing mental health problems or the need to hide from the police.

According to The Times, the government had to allocate 250,000 pounds (26.4 million rubles) per year for the work of one such agent. However, instead of fighting the real terrorists, the police deceived the women, whose fault was mainly due to their active citizenship.

The activists considered the surveillance to be paranoia.
The agents were constantly in touch with their supervisors, who received information about the activists' personal lives. For example, they revealed their vacation plans, financial situation, and even their sexual orientation.

According to one of Wilson's victims, she always noticed that her boyfriend spent too much time talking on the phone. After that, she realized that he had been communicating with the curator all this time. He always contacted him after waking up and before going to bed.

One of the SDS members, Andy Coles, even released a guide on how to quickly and easily get into another person's private life. It is noteworthy that his official secret was accidentally revealed by his younger brother, Reverend Richard Coles. In his autobiography, he mentioned that Andy led a double life.

There were two women among these secret agents. It is known that one of them used the pseudonym Lynn Watson and in 2006 seduced a man from a group of eco-activists.

According to the activists' lawyers, they did not actually pose any danger to society. The victims themselves rate such precautions on the part of the state as real paranoia. They don't understand why an entire operation has been launched against them.

Many of the women did not participate in anything more subversive than small anti-fascist or eco-activist campaigns, but they were perceived as nuts that should be smashed with a sledgehammer.

The victims joined forces in court against the London police
Mark Kennedy's story was the first to leak to the press. This was achieved by Lisa Jones. The public outcry united the victims, and by the end of 2011, a group of them had gathered, ready to sue the London police. Harriet Wistrich, a well-known radical feminist, became the lawyer of eight women. She described their first meeting in the book Sister in Law.

It's been a busy few hours. The women discovered how much they had in common, crying, laughing, and eating together. They agreed that the Metropolitan Police should be held accountable and that they did not want this to happen to anyone else.

Wistrich admitted that not everything was so smooth. She recalled that all the victims were involved in political activities and had their own beliefs and principles. Some of them contradicted others, so as a lawyer, Wistrich often had to smooth out the corners. The women, for example, could not agree on who was more to blame: the agents themselves or their superiors.

Despite this, Wistrich noted that an amazing camaraderie was born in their circle, forged by common experiences. Together, the women became real detectives. They studied archives, called people, followed in the footsteps of police lies, and even traveled to other countries for evidence.

Scotland Yard apologized to the women deceived by the police
Then the group managed to get an unprecedented public apology from the London police. Its representatives acknowledged that the actions of the police were manipulative and wrong and were the result of a culture of misogyny characteristic of the system.

They also noted the guilt of those who controlled the agents' activities. According to the police statement, they were supposed to prevent psychological and sexual violence.

Since then, undercover policing has undergone significant reforms, and today it is underpinned by strong governance and oversight with clear ethical principles and a legislative framework.

Despite the beautiful words, the metropolitan police continued to protect their employees and refused to expose them, as the victims demanded. In 2015, as British Interior Minister, Theresa May initiated an investigation into the clandestine activities of the police in England and Wales.

Within its framework, the investigators also took up the so-called espionage case. This angered Scotland Yard. His staff demanded that all proceedings involving undercover police officers be conducted in a closed format.

We do not confirm or deny the identity of any person who allegedly played a secret role. We are not ready to confirm or deny the involvement of individuals in specific operations.

The investigation of the "espionage case" has finally moved forward
It was only in 2020 that lawyers managed to bring the courts to the public level. A year later, Wilson secured compensation in the amount of 229 thousand pounds (24.2 million rubles). She stated in court that Kennedy's actions shocked her so much that she was unable to complete her studies and suffered from insomnia. The proceedings are still ongoing. Judges have to study the materials of covert operations that lasted for decades.

In March, The Guardian, together with the British television channel ITV, released a documentary about the "espionage case" — The Undercover Police Scandal: Love and Lies Exposed. They invited five women from the first group of Vistrich to join it. In the film, the former activists spoke frankly about their experiences: they showed archival photographs and recalled the moment when they revealed the monstrous lies of their lovers.

So, Wilson shared with reporters what she had learned about Kennedy. He eventually left the police force, unsuccessfully tried to work as a private investigator, and eventually began selling hot tubs. "It's not really the ending of a James Bond movie, is it?" she joked.

Yes, on the one hand, we have this sinister secret government operation, on the other, it involves people who might otherwise be furniture sellers. This highlights how dangerous it is to take them, give them a mask and a secret identity, and cut them off from the social control that forces people to behave decently. There must be some kind of public oversight.

It is still unclear whether the deceived activists will be able to punish the police. However, they have definitely managed to take the trash out of the hut and make the whole country at least wonder whether the police should have spent taxpayers' money so ridiculously and unattractively. Not to mention ruining the lives of not only the activists themselves, but also the real wives and children of undercover agents.

В 2000 году почти также закончилась с виду красивая история Элисон Смит и Марка Кэссиди. Он неожиданно бросил женщину и сбежал, оставив записку: «Мы хотим разных вещей. Я не могу преодолеть это».

Смит раскрыла его настоящую личность с помощью кредитной карты на имя М. Дженнер. Однажды женщина нашла ее в кармане пиджака бойфренда. Тогда он заявил, что купил карту у незнакомца в пабе ради шутки.

Суду известно минимум о 50 подобных жертвах. Всех их объединяет одно — связи с различными протестными группами. Смит активно участвовала в профсоюзной и антифашистской деятельности, Уилсон была гражданской активисткой, Джонс выступала за экологические реформы, Маклин посещала антивоенные демонстрации, а Стил была известна по «делу о МакКлевете».

Стил прославились в кругах экоактивистов, после того как корпорация McDonald's обвинила ее в клевете и подала в суд. Поводом послужила листовка, в которой она утверждала, что корпорация слишком мало платит своим работникам, наносит вред окружающей среде и жестоко обращается с животными, необходимыми корпорации для производства продуктов питания. В 2005 году Европейский суд по правам человека признал правоту Стил.

Все эти женщины стали целями Скотленд-Ярда за свои оппозиционные взгляды. Кеннеди, Дженнер, Дайнс и другие фигуранты этого дела были членами тайного подразделения лондонской полиции, сотрудники которого специально вступали в отношения с женщинами-активистками, чтобы не допустить протестов с их стороны

История этого Специального демонстрационного отряда (SDS) началась в 1968 году. Тогда, 17 марта, 25 тысяч человек вышли к посольству США с требованием не помогать Америке вести Вьетнамскую войну. Акция закончилась ожесточенным столкновением между британской полицией и протестующими. Консервативные члены парламента и лояльная им пресса стали активно продвигать идею того, что протесты — это политический радикализм, который способен разрушить страну.

Подавив протесты, министерство внутренних дел и полиция Лондона решили предотвратить будущие акции и создали SDS. Изначально его члены должны были бороться лишь с антивоенными группировками, однако в 1970-х годах они стали проникать в протестные организации самого разного толка.

Агенты, чтобы завоевать доверие женщин, действовали по одной инструкции
С 1968 по 2011 год сотрудники SDS и Национального подразделения по охране общественного порядка (NPOIU) следили за членами около тысячи политических групп. Как минимум 25 из них не просто вступали в организации, но и начинали романтические отношения с активистками, заключали браки и заводили с ними детей. Большинство из полицейских были женаты, и их настоящие жены часто не догадывались о происходящем.

Многие агенты брали себе имена покойных детей. Они все придерживались примерно одной истории: представлялись рабочими и говорили, что у них либо нет родственников, либо они живут далеко, либо не общаются с ними. Так им было проще лгать жертвам.

Периодически они убеждали женщин, что уезжают за границу по делам, а на самом деле в это время посещали Скотленд-Ярд и проводили время с настоящей семьей. Полицейские старались быть идеальными партнерами, во всем поддерживали активисток, а потом внезапно исчезали, ссылаясь на проблемы с ментальным здоровьем или необходимость скрыться от полиции.

Как пишет The Times, на работу одного такого агента правительству приходилось выделять 250 тысяч фунтов стерлингов (26,4 миллиона рублей) в год. Однако вместо того, чтобы бороться с реальными террористами, полицейские обманывали женщин, чья вина в основном заключалась лишь в наличии активной гражданской позиции.

Агенты постоянно были на связи с кураторами, которым доносили информацию о личной жизни активистов. Например, раскрывали их планы на отпуск, финансовое положение и даже сексуальную ориентацию.

По словам одной из пострадавших Уилсон, она всегда замечала, что ее бойфренд слишком много времени проводит, разговаривая по телефону. После она поняла, что все это время он общался с куратором. Он обязательно выходил с ним на связь после пробуждения и перед сном.

Один из членов SDS Энди Коулз даже выпустил руководство по тому, как быстро и легко проникнуть в частную жизнь другого человека. Примечательно, что его служебный секрет случайно раскрыл младший брат — преподобный Ричард Коулз. В автобиографии он упомянул, что Энди вел двойную жизнь.

Среди этих тайных агентов были две женщины. Известно, что одна из них использовала псевдоним Линн Уотсон и в 2006 году соблазнила мужчину из группы экоактивистов

Как отмечают адвокаты активисток, на самом деле они не представляли никакой опасности для общества. Сами жертвы оценивают такие меры предосторожности со стороны государства как настоящую паранойю. Они не понимают, почему против них развернули целую операцию.

Первой в прессу просочилась история Марка Кеннеди. Этого добилась Лиза Джонс. Общественный резонанс объединил пострадавших, и к концу 2011 года из них собралась группа, готовая судиться с лондонской полицией. Адвокатом восьми женщин стала известная радикальная феминистка Харриет Вистрич. Она описала их первую встречу в книге Sister in Law.

Тогда группе удалось добиться от полиции Лондона беспрецедентных публичных извинений. Ее представители признали, что действия полицейских были манипулятивными и неправильными и стали результатом характерной для системы культуры женоненавистничества.

Они также отметили вину тех, кто контролировал деятельность агентов. Согласно заявлению полиции, они должны были предотвратить психологическое и сексуальное насилие.

С тех пор тайная полицейская деятельность пережила значительные реформы, и сегодня она подкрепляется сильным управлением и надзором с четкими этическими принципами и законодательной базой

Она заявила в суде, что действия Кеннеди так ее потрясли, что она не смогла закончить учебу и страдала от бессонницы. Разбирательства еще продолжаются. Судьям приходится изучать материалы тайных операций, что длились десятилетиями.

В марте The Guardian совместно с британским телеканалом ITV выпустили документальный фильм о «шпионском деле» — The Undercover Police Scandal: Love and Lies Exposed (с англ. — «Скандал вокруг полицейских под прикрытием: разоблачение любви и лжи»). Они пригласили в него пять женщин из первой группы Вистрич. В фильме бывшие активистки откровенно рассказали о пережитом: показали архивные снимки и вспомнили о том моменте, когда раскрыли чудовищную ложь возлюбленных.

Так, Уилсон поделилась с журналистами тем, что ей удалось узнать о Кеннеди. В конце концов тот ушел из полиции, безуспешно пытался работать частным детективом и в итоге стал продавать гидромассажные ванны. «Это не совсем финал фильма о Джеймсе Бонде, не так ли?» — пошутила она.

Да, с одной стороны, у нас есть эта зловещая секретная государственная операция, с другой — в нее вовлечены люди, которые в противном случае могли бы быть продавцами мебели. Это подчеркивает, насколько опасно брать их, давать им маску и секретную личность и отрезать их от того социального контроля, который заставляет людей вести себя прилично. Должен же быть какой-то общественный надзор

Пока непонятно, смогут ли обманутые активистки добиться наказания для полицейских. Однако им уже точно удалось вынести сор из избы и заставить всю страну как минимум задаться вопросом: а стоило ли полиции так нелепо и некрасиво тратить деньги налогоплательщиков. Не говоря уже о том, чтобы ломать жизнь не только самим активисткам, но и настоящим женам и детям агентов под прикрытием.
