How to Investigate Cryptid Cases

The fundamental objective of “umbrella” cryptozoology is four-fold:

1. Identify cryptid reports about real animals in flesh-and-blood and prove their existence beyond the reasonable doubt

2. Identify mythological cryptids and figure out the message in each myth

3. Identify cryptid apparitions and figure out the message of each one

4. Identify ultraterrestrial cryptids and figure out the message of each one

And, of course, identify and debunk hoaxes in the process… however, it is a side effect, not the objective.

The filter for cryptids in flesh-and-blood is simple and straightforward (and also four-fold). These creatures:

1. Are small-to-medium size (hence not easily noticed)

2. Are close relatives of existing animal species

3. Live in sufficiently remote places so that their MVP is “invisible”

4. Their sightings are many and happen during a long period of time

The filter for apparitions and ultraterrestrials is simple as well. These entities:

1. Are simple beings (no hybrids)

2. Show up in spiritually powerful places

3. Manifest themselves to mystically powerful individuals

All other sightings (most likely, the overwhelming majority) are myths.

These days, investigation of cryptid cases inevitably begins online – by carefully studying sightings reports in reputable books, magazine articles and databases. At some point, however, a field trip is in order.

As I have already said, every cryptozoologist must be well-trained in interrogating witnesses. The exact composition of the investigation team depends on initial verdict about the nature of the cryptid in question:

1. Credible sightings of live animals must be investigated by zoologists

2. Sightings of apparitions and ultraterrestrials must be investigated by corresponding experts/professionals

3. Cryptid myths must be investigated by folklore studies professionals (professional mythologists)
