A review of a poem Alone by Ambrose Bierce

Alone

In contact, lo! the flint and steel,
By sharp and flame, the thought reveal
That he the metal, she the stone,
Had cherished secretly alone.

A poem based on the anithesis, as well as the elipsis, the omission of direct expression of feelings that might have been mutual. The conflict and the plot turns within a poem are wrapped into the candid understatement that veils the faces, the mimic, the gestures and the words of the two protagonists, male and female. The poem's form conveys a lyrical message by means of blurring lines and leaving a trace of secrecy between the aforementioned individuals. These literary devices were typical for the Greek poetic tradition and partially the French sentimental novel on a background of bright and obviously ground-breaking historical events.
