Russia. A confessional in a Russian Orthodox church.
Behind the screen, a priest. A young girl is confessing, sobbing.
The Girl:
— Father, I’m in terrible trouble, I’m pregnant! I don’t know what to do! I’m in my third year of university… I want to finish my studies… Who will raise the child?
The Priest (in a cutting voice):
— A woman has no need for education. So the Church teaches, so say the Holy Fathers. A woman’s vocation is to give birth and be silent. Obedience and motherhood — that is your future. And you will receive your reward in Heaven. Our latest Council has ruled: “Women’s education is a temptation from the Evil One.”
