Life is good

I saw the tv screen from afar—it was the weather report. The weatherman was smiling, but the numbers behind his back weren’t very inspiring. The temperature was hovering just above freezing. I took off my sweater and placed it next to my watch, phone, and keys. Then I took two steps forward, and once again, a high-pitched beep drowned out all other sounds. I stepped back through the gate-like metal detector.
It was my third hour at the airport, and this was the final barrier between me and the sparkling duty-free shops, the shining smiles of the stewardess, when their lips danced to produce the familiar question: What would you like to drink?
A TSA officer approached me, holding a handheld metal detector that resembled a short gladiator sword. When he scanned my chest—right over the area of my heart—the high-pitched beeping flared up again.
It felt strange. I’m a warm-hearted man—there’s no way my heart could be made of metal. It turned out there was a small container of heart medication in the pocket of my T-shirt.
They let me go. I grabbed a phone, keys, and a watch from the table beside the gate-like metal detector, then moved quickly toward the gleaming duty-free shops.
Mechanically, I glanced at the phone screen. There was a new message. I stopped, startled. No — it wasn’t the debt collectors again.
«I can’t forget your last kiss» : it read.
My mind started to race. When was the last time I kissed someone? Two or three years ago—maybe five. Who is she? Images from the past began to flicker before my eyes, and names drifted through my mind. Has there ever been something in my life—something truly romantic? No, I couldn’t instantly recall any woman who had managed to anchor my heart. Maybe she—the one whose name I can’t remember—was in love with me years ago. And now, she’s finally brave enough to share her feelings. That thought was… pleasant. Or maybe I left some woman behind in a hotel without paying the bill, and this is just a clever trick to make me pay what I owe. At that moment, the phone started ringing. My heart froze. My vision blurred. All I could hear was only this sound. Is it she!?
— Hi, I need to meet you, — said a pleasant woman’s voice.
I couldn’t get a word out—I just nodded silently.
«Do I need to fly to Miami for a Mexican bay cruise?
I could be diving into an ocean of emotion—right here, right now», I thought.
— Hello! Can you hear me? — she said.
— Yes, — I managed to reply.
— Do you see the wine and spirits shop?
— Yes,— I said, a bit too enthusiastically.
— Great. Go there—I’ll meet you in the whisky section. I’ll have a jar of black caviar on my hand. You’ll recognize me.
Whisky, black caviar, love — dreams coming true. That was the only thought in my mind. I Recognized her at once. She was beautiful, yet her face was completely unfamiliar.
— There’s been a mistake. Back at the metal detector, I accidentally took your phone—and you took mine, she said.
The paradise in my mind was blown away. We exchanged phones and she walked away gracefully. I stood still.
«I can’t forget your last kiss» was meant not for me, but for her! She was beautiful. It wasn’t a surprise. Someone loved her so deeply that sent this message just minutes after saying goodbye.
In one hour I was on a plane.
— What do you want to drink? — a stewardess said, smiling.
Life is a good thing after all.
