THE CYCLICAL INFLUENCE OF THE SEVEN RAYS ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

(ESOTERIC PSYCHOLOGY)

The theory of the seven rays is described in The Secret Doctrine by H. P. Blavatsky and in A Treatise on the Seven Rays by A. A. Bailey. During each new manifestation of Spirit in matter, matter undergoes differentiation into seven aspects or qualities.

This repeated division in time and space creates the entire diversity of worlds. However, this symmetry is not always visible, because at a given moment in time and at a given point in space not all aspects are manifested.

As a result of many years of research and observation, and in accordance with esoteric knowledge, we propose the following hypothesis and invite you to test its validity in practice through analysis of your own life experience. As Djwhal Khul said: believe nothing — verify everything through your own experience.

All processes in the universe occur under the cyclical influence of cosmic divine energies, the Rays, and the human being is no exception. Each primary and secondary ray energy has its own period of influence. On the scale of a human life incarnated in a physical body, one primary period equals seven years. There are thirteen such periods in total, though exceptions do occur. Each primary period is divided into seven subperiods of one year each, governed by sub-rays.

The Exit of the Spirit from Matter

At the age of forty-two, a person begins to experience a fading of vital functions. However, if a person develops their consciousness and realizes themselves not as a personality but as Spirit, then at the age of forty-two the liberation of the Spirit from the bonds of Personality begins, and after liberation from the physical body, the consciousness of the Spirit may continue its development until the next incarnation into a new physical body.

The first period, prior to physical birth, is under the influence of the Seventh Ray of Spirit–Matter.
The Seventh Ray is the ray of order, ceremony, and magic, the materialization of spirit in matter. Before the human spirit incarnates in a physical body, the construction of the subtle bodies of the human being takes place. If sufficient time has passed since the previous incarnation and all the subtle bodies of the personality and the soul have had time to disintegrate, only the monad in the atmic sheath remains, the eternal Spirit.

The atmic sheath of consciousness preserves only those accumulations of knowledge and earthly experience that are necessary for the evolution of the Spirit. The Spirit incarnates in different personalities; therefore, it cannot remember what pertained to its personalities, but it can recall the knowledge that was necessary for the development of the Spirit itself. An exception consists of recent incarnations, after which little time has passed and the subtle bodies of the personality and the soul (the mediator between Spirit and body) have not yet disintegrated.

First, the Spirit (or the karmic judges) chooses the time and place of birth, as well as its future parents, in accordance with its karma and the chosen purpose of the forthcoming incarnation. Then the buddhic body, or the soul body, is constructed. After that, the subtle bodies of the personality are formed: the mental, astral (emotional), and etheric bodies. The latter connects the physical body with all the others. When the matrix is ready and all conditions are fulfilled, conception occurs on the physical plane.

However, in life all favorable conditions rarely come together, which is why problems arise, especially during the incarnation of a highly developed Spirit with a specific high mission. When, under the influence of the Spirit and the subtle bodies, the physical body is formed and can exist independently, physical birth occurs. Further development of the physical body proceeds according to a given program, depending on surrounding conditions. The development of the subtle bodies of the personality and the soul begins.

Second Period: from Birth to 7 Years

Under the influence of the Sixth Ray of Devotion and Idealism

The Sixth Ray governs the astral plane. During this period, emotions, feelings, and the perception of astral images develop. Learning is best accomplished through play; imagination must be developed. A sense of devotion to a person and to an idea is formed. Everything is idealized.

First year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order (Spirit–Matter).
The Spirit forms the astral body; emotions and desires develop; active perception of images occurs. The person is accustomed to routine. Information is perceived at the subconscious level, mainly through sensations. The child learns to control their body and accumulates experience of physical sensations. Accordingly, upbringing should be structured in this way. Negative sensations and emotions can imprint a negative developmental program, as well as various complexes and fears. The moment of birth and the first days are especially important. Correct spiritual birth in positive conditions, without negative emotions, creates favorable conditions for development and prevents many problems from manifesting.

Second year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
Active formation of ideals occurs. Figurative thinking develops; speech begins to form; emotions and sensations are recognized. Devotion to parents, relatives, and close people develops. Devotion to God is laid down. The astral body develops actively. It is important to cultivate positive emotions and form positive images.

Third year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
Active formation of speech occurs; logic begins to develop. Awareness of words and conceptual apparatus develops. Active assimilation of knowledge begins. Emotions are recognized and remembered. The foundation of future logical thinking is laid. One can begin teaching reading and arithmetic through figurative and emotional thinking. The child should be given more concrete knowledge at the level of images. Active cognition of the surrounding world occurs.

Fourth year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
The person learns to communicate with others and to establish correct human relationships. During this period, the child needs as much interaction with different people as possible. They must be taught how to communicate properly and behave correctly in society. Positive emotions should be developed through art: drawing, dance, music, singing, sculpting, and acquaintance with classical art. The child may be taught prayer and meditation. The child must learn to harmoniously integrate into the surrounding world and to love nature and be in harmony with it.

Fifth year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active development of the astral body takes place; various feelings, sensations, and emotions are actively explored. An active emotional life with positive emotions is required. Proper attitudes toward negative emotions must be formed, and protection from them taught. The child must be taught to control emotions, manage them, prevent aggression, and transform it into creativity. Development through art, reading, and active exploration of the surrounding world is essential. At this age, the child asks many questions, and they must be answered, later it will be too late. During this period, the need for learning and active cognition of the world is laid.

Sixth year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
A philosophical worldview begins to develop. Attitudes toward God, the Higher Mind, Spirit, and soul are formed. Knowledge about the subtle world of the human being must be given, and a worldview foundation established. The child begins to comprehend philosophical concepts: good and evil, truth and falsehood, reality and illusion. A sense of the reality of the spiritual world, God, divine energies, and the subtle plane must be developed. During this period, the astral world is as real for the child as the physical one, and extrasensory abilities develop easily.

Seventh year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
Independence develops actively; the personality is formed. A struggle “for a place under the sun” takes place. Leadership qualities, independence, and a striving for freedom manifest. Aggression toward any restrictions may appear. It is necessary to teach correct relationships between personality and society and a harmonious balance between personal interests and those of others; otherwise, an egoist concerned only with themselves may develop.

Third Period: from 7 to 14 Years

Under the influence of the Fifth Ray of Concrete Knowledge

The Fifth Ray governs the mental plane. During this period, active construction of the mental body occurs, active learning of concrete knowledge, development of logical thinking, and cognition of civilization. By the age of fourteen, the basic formation of the personality is completed. A developed personality should have a developed physical body, a developed intellect, and a developed sensory apparatus.

Eighth year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order.
Active construction of the mental body occurs. Logic develops actively. The person becomes accustomed to order in life and in their own thinking. Information is systematized and must be taught as such. A need for informational and intellectual development is formed. Logical thinking must be developed; one can study computer science, computer operation, various schemes and tables, spelling, foreign languages, musical notation, and so on.

Ninth year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
Awareness of emotions and feelings occurs. The child must be taught to control emotions and feelings, observe them, and describe them in words, images, or colors. At this age, children easily perceive abstract symbols, philosophical and spiritual concepts; the subtle world is perceived as objective reality; concepts of spirit, soul, and God are easily accepted, and a religious worldview is formed. The child may be introduced to various religions, ideologies, and philosophical teachings to protect them from fanaticism in the future.

Tenth year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
Awareness of one’s own thoughts occurs. The child must be taught to observe thoughts and control them, prevent aggression, and transform it into creativity. Intellect develops actively; the intellectual foundation for future development is formed; logical thinking is maximally developed. Mathematics, spelling, and foreign languages must be taught.

Eleventh year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
Awareness of relationships with people and the surrounding world occurs. Through awareness of conflict, harmony is achieved. The person learns to build correct relationships with people. An attitude toward art develops; creative abilities are revealed; technique in music, dance, and painting develops — intellectual art. Literature, fairy tales, and myths should be studied.

Twelfth year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active cognition of civilization occurs: history, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, computers. Maximum assimilation of new information and concrete knowledge takes place. Logical thinking develops actively.

Thirteenth year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
Philosophical thinking develops; psychology and human behavior are studied; the person learns to communicate and build correct relationships. Knowledge is tested by experience and turns into wisdom. Spiritual and Divine Love is cognized. Psychology should be studied through literature and fairy tales.

Fourteenth year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
A transitional age. The person learns to manage the energy of will, which carries both creation and the destruction of old, unnecessary forms. Active formation of the personality and the struggle “for a place under the sun” occur. The person strives for self-assertion, independence, and autonomous living and must be taught this.

Fourth Period: from 14 to 21 Years

Under the influence of the Fourth Ray of Harmony through Conflict

Fifteenth year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order.
The study of culture begins. The soul, the buddhic body, is formed. Intuition develops actively. The soul is the mediator between the personality and the Spirit. The soul (conscience) is selfless by nature, unlike the egoistic personality. With the beginning of the development of the buddhic body, a conflict arises between personality and soul. The personality strives to live in the physical world, while the soul strives for the spiritual world. This conflict continues until the soul matures and overcomes the egoistic personality, turning it into an instrument of the soul and the Spirit. Then the person receives a second birth.

Sixteenth year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
Spiritual ideals are formed; devotion and friendship develop. The first pure love and friendship of this period leave a trace for life. The ability to dream and idealize develops. Love and devotion to God develop. Various religions, spiritual and philosophical teachings should be studied.

Seventeenth year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
Intellectual–spiritual development occurs. Culture and psychology should be studied. During this period, esoteric teachings are easily studied: concepts of the subtle world: biofields, subtle bodies of the human being, divine planes, chakras (energy centers), various subtle and psychic energies, work with thought-forms, karmic diagnostics, and so on.

Eighteenth year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
Active study of society occurs. Through working through various conflicts, harmony with people and the world is achieved. The person gains life experience through their own mistakes. A conflict between soul and personality also occurs, which may drag on for many years if the person does not develop consciousness and does not strive to rid themselves of egoism.

Nineteenth year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active cognition of the soul and Spirit occurs; there is a striving to resolve all spiritual conflicts. World spiritual culture must be studied. The person seeks to understand the meaning of life, the purpose of life, their destiny, and their Higher Self.

Twentieth year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
Cognition of Divine Love and Divine Wisdom occurs through the conflict between soul and personality. The buddhic body actively forms; spiritual reason and spiritual intellect develop. The need for communication with God increases.

Twenty-first year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
Another transitional age. The conflict between soul and personality intensifies to the limit. If the soul has matured, it wins this struggle. The person may receive a second birth (the first initiation). This means that they die as an egoistic personality and begin to live as a pure, selfless soul, turning the developed personality into its instrument and servant. The person becomes independent of attachments to the physical world. At this age, knowledge from past lives begins to be recalled (if those lives were lived meaningfully), and spiritual abilities developed in past incarnations begin to open.

Fifth Period: from 21 to 28 Years

Under the influence of the Third Ray of Active Cognition

Twenty-second year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order.
A favorable time for the formation and development of the atmic body, spiritual consciousness, the sheath of the monad (the seed of the Spirit). The Spirit actively cognizes matter and develops through the soul and personality as instruments. Another conflict begins — between soul and Spirit. The person begins to realize their destiny and mission. The Spirit descends maximally into the material world; it must cognize it, adapt, and relate adequately to any environment, otherwise conflict with society and a desire to withdraw from it may arise.

Twenty-third year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
If a person has not received sufficient knowledge of religions and spiritual and philosophical teachings, they may become a fanatic of some religion or even a sect. If a person has developed spiritually and intellectually, they may study esoteric teachings accessible only to initiates, including science. Philosophy must be studied and one’s own philosophical worldview formed; religions and spiritual teachings must be studied to create one’s own spiritual perception of the world and relationship with God and the Higher Mind. Active cognition of the world of ideas occurs.

Twenty-fourth year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
If a person is engaged in creativity, they make discoveries and attempt to concretize them. This is a favorable time for studying spiritual and esoteric sciences, including natural sciences, and for learning in any creative field. One must learn to control emotions and feelings.

Twenty-fifth year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
One of the main crises of human life. Conflicts between Spirit, soul, personality, and society must be resolved in favor of the Spirit and lead to harmony between the person and the world. The person may change their life on the physical plane. Intuition, the spiritual heart, and conscience must be listened to; otherwise, mistakes may be made that slow the development of the Spirit and the realization of one’s purpose.

Twenty-sixth year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active cognition and development of the Spirit occur. Major discoveries are made, which a creative person will work on throughout their life. Active study of the most complex sciences occurs. In art, a search for one’s own expression and style takes place. The Spirit actively cognizes matter, attempts to control it, and materialize thought-forms.

Twenty-seventh year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
Active cognition of Divine Love and Divine Wisdom occurs. Consciousness develops actively, as does the spiritual–abstract mind and the ability to communicate with God and the Cosmic Mind. Harmonious relationships with the world are built. Initiates pass the path of the accepted disciple. A sense of spiritual and divine love develops; spiritual life experience accumulates, and wisdom is acquired.

Twenty-eighth year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
Another spiritual crisis. Active cognition of Divine Will, the Divine Plan, and karmic retribution occurs. The person realizes that they are not free, that cosmic divine laws exist, and that violation of them leads to karmic punishment. If the person builds their plans in accordance with the Divine Plan, they receive luck, success, and supernormal abilities as a reward.

Sixth Period: from 28 to 35 Years

Under the influence of the Second Ray of Divine Love–Wisdom

Twenty-ninth year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order.
Another transitional age. Active cognition of the outer world gives way to cognition of the inner world. Development of the monad, the seed of the Spirit, begins. The person may significantly reduce external activity or even become a “hermit.” External conditions necessary for inner development may change. Worldview, life goals, and the meaning of life may change, causing suffering of the soul. The Seventh sub-ray of Spirit–Matter changes material conditions in accordance with the needs of the Spirit and the Plans of God, which may not coincide with human plans.

Thirtieth year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
The soul strives for divine love and, if it does not find it, suffers. The monad develops its atmic sheath of consciousness, accumulating spiritual experience. The person may live in a dual world: the Spirit in the spiritual, divine realm, and the personality in the physical. Devotion to the Teacher, God, the Divine Mother, or religion (or an idea) develops.

Thirty-first year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
A striving for spiritual knowledge arises. Religious, philosophical, and esoteric teachings are studied. If a person has completed the path of the Disciple, learned to manage emotions, control thoughts, ceased judging and denying, and moved onto the path of synthesis and unity of the world, they may complete the second initiation (baptism) and become an initiate. Jesus Christ received baptism at this age and became a Teacher. The initiate must be able to love humanity and selflessly serve God and people. After initiation, they embark on the path of the Teacher, create their own school, and learn to teach. It is not enough to possess spiritual knowledge; one must be able to transmit it and help others spiritually develop. If a person reaches a high level of spiritual development at a young age but does not rid themselves of egoism and spiritual arrogance, they may fall and stagnate for a long time. Therefore, along with spiritual knowledge, disciples must be taught to overcome egoism and spiritual pride.

Thirty-second year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
The person learns to eliminate conflicts between the spiritual and material worlds and achieve harmony. Society often poorly perceives spiritual values, which causes conflicts. One may create an environment only of like-minded people, but sooner or later communication with everyone is inevitable. One must learn to find a common language with anyone, speaking to each person at their level of consciousness and in their language.

Thirty-third year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active cognition of the divine world, divine love, divine knowledge, and divine wisdom occurs. If the person has become a Teacher, they actively teach others and learn themselves. The initiate receives enlightenment and illumination. Consciousness and the atmic sheath of the Spirit develop actively. Creative individuals create actively, cognizing the divine world through creativity.

Thirty-fourth year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
“The Age of Christ.” The maximum manifestation of Divine Love–Wisdom. The soul reaches maturity (if it has not slept). The initiate brings light to all people and radiates divine love. Atma reaches maximum speed of development. However, a conflict between the Spirit and society arises.

Thirty-fifth year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
A crisis period. The energy of Divine Will carries both creation and destruction of obsolete forms. The person must learn to manage aggressive destructive energy and begins the path of the spiritual warrior.

Seventh Period: from 35 to 42 Years

Under the influence of the First Ray of Divine Will

Thirty-sixth year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order.
A transitional age. The monad and the Spirit develop actively (if they are not asleep). A favorable period for politicians. A strong Spirit follows the path of the spiritual warrior and fights dark forces. It must descend deeply into matter and pass through all the “circles of hell,” emerging pure and perfected. The crucifixion of the soul begins. The initiate learns to work according to the Divine Plan in cooperation with their inner group and other initiates of the Hierarchy of Light — Christ and the Teachers.

Thirty-seventh year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
Divine Will and the Divine Plan are cognized. One must learn to consciously cooperate with the Plan and build one’s plans accordingly; otherwise, obstacles will arise. Spiritual work and spiritual assistance to people continue. Trials on the path of the spiritual warrior continue.

Thirty-eighth year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
Complex esoteric knowledge is easily perceived; Divine Will and the Plan are cognized. Spiritual work proceeds in the realm of knowledge, information, and teaching.

Thirty-ninth year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
If the soul is sufficiently developed, a struggle between soul and Spirit begins. If the Spirit wins, the crucifixion of the soul begins; together with the previously crucified personality, it must become a servant of the Spirit, an instrument of God. Personal will disappears, and the person becomes a conscious and voluntary conduit of Divine Will, possessing divine powers and knowledge. They consciously manage the energy of Divine Love through the energy of Divine Will. The path of the initiate is a path of renunciation: renouncing the freedom of personality grants the freedom of the soul; renouncing the freedom of the soul grants the freedom of the Spirit.

Fortieth year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active cognition of Divine Will occurs; the monad, the Spirit, develops actively. The person learns to manage energies, matter, people, and the energies of destruction and purification, becoming a spiritual warrior.

Forty-first year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
Divine Will and Divine Love unite. Will alone is too destructive, but combined with love it becomes Good Will. If wisdom and creative activity are added, the trinity of God is formed: the Will of the Father, the Spirit of Love, and the Creative Active Cognition of the Son. The person must feel unity with God and with the entire world, humanity, and Nature — as a single Being.

Forty-second year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
Another crisis year. Maximum development of the Spirit and all its sheaths occurs. Everything unnecessary and obsolete that hinders the Spirit’s development and realization of its purpose is destroyed. The person refines the qualities of the spiritual warrior and must become a universal instrument of God — a Healer, Teacher, Warrior, and Ruler. At forty-two, the development of all bodies ends and the period of giving and destruction begins — the exit of the Spirit from matter. If the Spirit develops, it uses the bodies of the personality and the soul as instruments. If the Spirit is not awakened and does not develop, destruction of the subtle bodies begins, followed by the physical body.

Eighth Period: from 42 to 49 Years

Under the influence of the Second Ray of Divine Love–Wisdom

The Second Ray governs the monadic body, which does not disintegrate even after physical death. If the Spirit slept and did not develop, life was lived in vain. If the Spirit developed, the period of giving and fulfilling one’s purpose begins.

Forty-third year

Under the influence of the First sub-ray of Divine Will.
Refusal to fulfill one’s purpose or mission may lead to the Spirit leaving the physical body and death (which may occur at any time by the will of the Spirit or by the decision of the Karmic Judges). If everything is done correctly, there will be no obstacles or misfortunes, though trials and difficulties are possible; a developed Spirit overcomes them easily.

Forty-fourth year

Under the influence of the Second sub-ray of Love–Wisdom.
This period is analogous to the “Age of Christ,” but now at the stage of giving. The initiate radiates Divine Love governed by Divine Will. They must strictly follow the Divine Plan, as many people’s destinies and the Plan of humanity depend on their actions. The initiate may become a Teacher of Wisdom and bring Revelations to people.

Forty-fifth year

Under the influence of the Third sub-ray of Active Cognition.
Active transmission of accumulated spiritual knowledge on the material plane occurs.

Forty-sixth year

Under the influence of the Fourth sub-ray of Harmony through Conflict.
Harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds is achieved and materialized in spiritual projects: books, schools, temples, and so on.

Forty-seventh year

Under the influence of the Fifth sub-ray of Concrete Knowledge.
Concrete knowledge of Divine Love and Wisdom is given.

Forty-eighth year

Under the influence of the Sixth sub-ray of Devotion and Idealism.
A new spiritual teaching is delivered.

Forty-ninth year

Under the influence of the Seventh sub-ray of Order.
Spiritual projects are materialized and systems are created.

Ninth Period: from 49 to 56 Years

Under the influence of the Third Ray of Active Cognition

The Third Ray governs the atmic body, which does not disintegrate even after physical death. Atma, the sheath of the monad, accumulates spiritual knowledge and experience from each incarnation. In this period, its development ceases and it works only in giving; however, in an initiate it may continue to develop even after physical death if continuity of consciousness is achieved. If the Spirit developed, consciousness continues under the Spirit’s guidance. The initiate may receive revelations from the Higher Mind, from God.

Tenth Period: from 56 to 63 Years

Under the influence of the Fourth Ray of Harmony through Conflict

The Fourth Ray governs the buddhic body, or soul. If a person did not develop, degradation or fading of the soul begins, the destruction of the buddhic body; the person loses the capacity for spiritual love and spiritual intellect. If the Spirit developed, the soul continues to live through the support of the Spirit, which is part of God and receives divine energy to fulfill the Plan. A state of divine detachment and harmony with Nature and the World is achieved.

Eleventh Period: from 63 to 70 Years

Under the influence of the Fifth Ray of Knowledge

The Fifth Ray governs the mental body. If the Spirit did not develop, fading and destruction of the mental body begins; memory and intellectual abilities deteriorate. If the Spirit developed, it supports the mental body and uses intellect as an instrument for spiritual and creative work. Clear knowing and clairvoyance develop; spiritual vision emerges. The initiate becomes a Sage.

Twelfth Period: from 70 to 77 Years

Under the influence of the Sixth Ray of Devotion and Idealism

The Sixth Ray governs the astral body. If the Spirit did not develop, fading of emotions begins; feelings dull. If the Spirit developed, it supports the astral body for spiritual and creative work. The egoistic personality naturally disintegrates, and the Spirit becomes enlightened, liberated, and holy.

Thirteenth Period: from 77 to 84 Years

Under the influence of the Seventh Ray of Order (Spirit–Matter)

The Seventh Ray governs the physical plane. If the Spirit did not develop, fading of the vital functions of the physical body occurs. If the Spirit developed, it supports the physical body for spiritual and creative work until it is completed, then liberates itself from the body and continues its work on the subtle plane until the next incarnation.
