Loudoun Castle
is a ruined country house
nicknamed
the "Windsor of Scotland"
located
near Galston,
in the Loudoun area of Ayrshire, Scotland.

The majority of the building was constructed
from 1804 to 1811 around existing structures dating to the 15th and 17th centuries.
The building
was destroyed by fire in 1942
and never rebuilt,
while the rest of the property was converted
into the Loudoun Castle theme park in 1995,
which closed in 2010.
The ruins
are protected as a category A listed building.

History

Loudoun Castle
is the former home of
the Mure-Campbell family.

Upon
the marriage by

Flora Mure-Campbell,
6th Countess of Loudoun,

to

Francis Rawdon-Hastings,
2nd Earl of Moira
(later Marquess of Hastings),

on 12 July 1804,

it became the home of
the Rawdon-Hastings family.

While Loudoun
was in the ownership of
Edith Rawdon-Hastings,
the ownership named encountered
a change once more by the death of
Sir Charles Abney-Hastings, 2nd Bt.

In Edith's inheritance
there was a condition from
Sir Charles,
a natural grandson of
the 10th Earl of Huntingdon –
brother of Lady Edith's grandmother –
that by Royal Licence and Act of Parliament,
whoever inherited
the estate of the Abney family
shall take on the surname of
Abney-Hastings.

The present castle
was built
for
Flora,
adjoining
the 17th-century extension,
and the 15th-century keep.

The plans of Loudoun Castle
were drawn up in 1805
by the architect Archibald Elliot.

One estimate suggests
that the "improvements" to Loudoun Castle
between 1804 and 1811
cost over Pounds: 
100,000
– over Pounds:  3,500,000
in today's money. 

The massive structure, known as
The Windsor of Scotland,
had over 90 apartments,
and was dominated by the main tower
in the rear of the building.

The regal library on the south front,
measured 100 feet in length
and contained upwards of 11,000 volumes.

Archibald Elliot's plans
included a large banqueting hall
on the north front,
but this was not built through lack of money.

The plantations around the castle
comprise a great variety of trees, many of them of very stately appearance and brought from America
by
John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun,
who was
governor of Virginia in 1756
and who during his military services in various parts of the world sent home every kind of valuable tree he met with.
He also formed an extensive collection of willows selected from England, Ireland and Holland.

To The Countess Of Loudoun

WILL gentle LOUDOUN deign to lend an ear,
When nature speaks, and sorrow drops a tear?
Within your walls my happiness I found
Luxuriant flourish, like the plants around:
Blithe as the birds that perch on yonder spray,
In joyous notes, I pour'd the willing lay.
Beneath your roof there humble lines had birth,
Whose honour'd Patrons now lie low in earth;
Or borne by Fate far from their native shore,
With smiles auspicious glad my heart no more.
Here youth and beauty, innocence and love,
I joy'd to see, to serve, and to approve:
Here honour'd Age to all around did show,
That virtue's paths alone can bliss bestow:
Here moral lessons spoke from ev'ry part,
And peace and kindness wrote them on my heart.
Hoary inhabitants around the place,
Whose faithful services obtain'd that grace,
'Mid ev'ry comfort rural life affords,
Shower prayers and blessings, on its former Lords.
To you the young are taught to lift the eye,
Mild morning sun of their unclouded sky.
Blest in a lot left nothing to desire,
Those happy scenes did future hopes inspire,
That thus my life in careless ease might run,
My age supported by my master's son;
In him, that goodness, and those virtues find,
Which grateful numbers meet in you combin'd.
Ah! like a changeful vision of the night,

Соизволит ли благородный
ЛУДУН, ЛОУДУН
выслушать меня,
Когда природа говорит,
а печаль роняет слезу?
В ваших стенах я обрела свое счастье
Пышно цветущее, как растения вокруг:
Беспечны, как птицы,
что садятся на те брызги,,
В радостных нотах
я изливаю свою душу.
Под твоей крышей
рождались скромные строки,,
Чьи почитатели ныне покоятся в земле,;
Или были унесены Судьбой
далеко от родных берегов.,
С радостными улыбками,
которые больше не радуют мое сердце.
Здесь молодость и красота, невинность и любовь.,
Я рада видеть, служить и одобрять:
Здесь почтенный Возраст всем окружающим был виден,
Что только пути добродетели
могут даровать блаженство:
Здесь нравственные уроки звучали со всех сторон,
И мир и доброта запечатлелись в моем сердце.
Седовласые обитатели этого места,
Те, чья верная служба снискала эту благодать,
несмотря на все удобства сельской жизни,
осыпают молитвами и благословениями
своих бывших хозяев.
К вам
молодежь
обращаются с призывом поднять глаза
к мягкому утреннему солнцу
с безоблачного неба.
Благословенный во многом,
он не оставлял никаких желаний,

A 300-pound stone
from Loudoun Castle
in Scotland
was presented to Loudoun County, Virginia
by the Countess of Loudoun
and the Queen's representative,
the Rouge Dragon,
in a special ceremony.

In 2015, during the 15th Earl's inaugural trip, he visited Loudoun County and posed for photos with Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott York.[8]

Wallace's Sword
Published text from The Antiquarian –

"The Countess of Loudoun recently arrived at Loudoun Castle with the sword of Wallace. This sword has been reserved in Loudoun Castle from death of Wallace until five years back when it was removed by the late Marquis of Hastings to his seat in Leicestershire. On the death of the marquis in 1868 it passed into possession of the present countess who has just brought back to its old home.
It will be remembered that
the mother
of Wallace
was a daughter of Loudoun,
and that on death of
his uncle
Sir Reginald Crawford of Loudoun –
hanged by the English at Ayr Wallace – Wallace had the custody of his only daughter
Susanna Crawford of Loudoun
married
a son of
Sir Niel Campbell of Argyll
and ancestress of
the present Countess of Loudoun
the hereditary custodian of the sword of William Wallace.

"One of Wallace's swords was a treasured family possession, and was hung in Loudoun Castle's entrance hall.

To give a visual perspective,
the hall was around 70 feet by 30 feet, and
the Wallace Sword was placed in a position of honour on the east wall."

under the River Irvine,
to Cessnock Castle
over 2 kilometres (1.2 mi)
to the south.

Loudoun Castle was a theme park
set around the ruins of the 19th century Loudoun Castle
near Galston, in the Loudoun area of Ayrshire, Scotland.

The park opened in 1995,
and closed at the end of the 2010 season.
The park's mascot was Rory the Lion.

History

The 594-acre estate was purchased by London-based company, Lands Improvement Holdings plc in 1993, who built and developed the theme park which opened in 1995.

In 1998, the park was sold to travelling showman Raymond Codona and then again to Henk Bembom's Parkware Ltd in 2003.
Bembom
invested
5 million Pounds
during his first year there,
followed by an additional
2 million Pounds  in the second.
Bembom
continued to bring new rides and attractions
to the park each year, including  another
2 million Pounds  of investment in 2007.
 
Total: 
9 million Pounds  of investment 
for 2003-2004
and 2007.

In winter 2006,
Parkware moved
all their operations and ride stock to Loudoun
from their previous storage buildings
in Margate.

On 15 July 2007,

18-year-old ride operator

Mark Blackwood

fell
80 feet (24 m)
from a roller coaster
he was pushing, the Rat, which had got stuck.
He was taken to Crosshouse Hospital
in Kilmarnock for treatment
but died there
on 16 July 2007.

After a two-week trial,
the jury found the park owners not guilty of failing to provide proper training and supervision
at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court
on Saturday
10 October 2009.

In September 2010
it was announced that the park had closed,
Bembom stating that it was "no longer economically viable."

There were no clear indications as to the future use of the site, whether the current owners intend to sell the business on as a 'going concern' or if they intended to use the site for other purposes.[6] As of February 2011 a number of rides were for sale, including Twist 'n' Shout, Goldrush, Barnstormer, Wacky Worm, Crows Nest and Jammy Dodgems.[citation needed] As a Category A listed building, the possibilities for any redevelopment of the ruins of Loudon Castle proper, as opposed to this adjacent theme park, are severely limited by law.

Rides

The Plough and The Rat rides at Loudoun Castle
Many of the rides at Loudoun Castle had been operated at Dreamland Margate in Kent when it was owned by Bembom Brothers. A few of these rides can be seen in the Only Fools and Horses 1989 Christmas Special "The Jolly Boys' Outing", in which the Trotters and many other male cast members visit Dreamland Margate.

In 2009,

Loudoun Castle had five roller coasters:

 - Gold Rush – a Zierer Four Man Bob coaster
- Slitherin' – a Schwarzkopf Jet 400
- Twist 'n' Shout – a classic looping Schwarzkopf Silverarrow
- The Rat – a Maurer S;hne Wild Mouse
- Wacky Worm – a junior coaster by I.E. Park

Also in the park were various thrill rides including:

- Barnstormer 
a 140-foot-tall (43 m)
shot-and-drop tower
built by S&S Power.
Relocated from the defunct Pleasureland - Southport,
the ride was officially opened on 23 May 2006
by The MacDonald Brothers.

-  Loggers Leap –
Loudoun's original log flume
Black Pearl – an inverting Pirate ship.
Relocated to Lightwater Valley.

-  The Captains Wheel –
an Enterprise ride.
Relocated to Avonturenpark Hellendoorn.

- The Plough –
 the largest Chair-O-Planes ride in the world (originally operated as The Apollo 14 at Ponypark Slagharen)

- The Crow's Nest –
a HUSS Troika

- The Milk Churn –
