The Parable of the Most Important Secret
But one day he caught a cold and lay in bed alone for three days. His hands couldn’t carry anything, his voice was hoarse, and the broken toys just sat in the corner. The Boy became afraid. «If I’m not needed by anyone right now… then who am I? Maybe I don’t even exist? » His Grandfather came into the room, brought him some tea, and sat down beside him.
— You look like you’ve lost something very important, — said Grandfather. — I’ve lost my usefulness, — whispered the Boy. — Now I’m nobody.
Grandfather thought for a moment, then asked:— Tell me, where did this scratch on your hand come from?— I fell off my bike last year when I was learning to ride without hands.— And this scar on your knee?— That’s when I climbed that tall pine tree for the ball and slipped.— Why are you afraid of the loud sound of the garbage truck?— Because once it started right above me while I was sleeping, and I thought it was an earthquake.
Grandfather nodded.
— You see, the whole world is a great library. And every life is a unique book that no one but its author can write. To be needed by yourself means to be the main writer, keeper, and reader of your own, one-of-a-kind book.
You need yourself to write this story: not just «I fell», but «I fell trying to fly». Not just «I was scared», but «I was scared, but then I found out it was just a garbage truck». You turn simple bruises and fears into chapters of your personal saga. You are the only one who can take pain and confusion and turn them into experience, not catastrophe. If you betray this inner author — if in a moment of suffering you say «I am nobody» — then someone else will write your book. And it won’t be yours. To be needed by yourself is to never give your pen to anyone else.
The Boy listened, eyes wide open.
— But why am I needed by the world? — he asked. — To fix toys and carry bags? — Oh, no, — smiled Grandfather. — Those are just little services. The real reason you are needed by the world is much more amazing.
He walked to the window.
— Do you see that cloud? One person will see a dragon in it. Another — a ship. And you might see a sleeping polar bear cub. And that vision is yours alone, unique in the whole universe. You are needed by the world as a source of new, never-before-seen reality. Your way of seeing a polar bear cub in a cloud is like adding a new color to the world’s palette.
— But the world is full of colors without me! — objected the Boy. — It is, — agreed Grandfather. — But imagine the universe is a huge, dark forest. Every new consciousness is like lighting a new lantern in the forest. And the light of each lantern is special. One shines yellow and sees friendliness in it. Another shines blue and sees sadness. And you… you might carry a lantern that shines green and sees secret growth in it. Your light, your way of perceiving life — that’s your unique contribution. Without you, the forest would be a little darker, a little poorer in shades. You are not a cog in a machine. You are a co-creator of the very picture of the world.
Grandfather put his hand on his shoulder.
— So when you get better, go out into the world. Not as a «helper», but as an explorer and an artist. Carry your lantern. Look at the clouds with your own eyes. Feel pain in your own way. Turn an empty lot into your own «meadow» by your own rules. The world doesn’t need your labor. It needs your gaze. Because through that gaze, the universe sees itself anew for the first time. And that is your most important and beautiful usefulness.
The Boy got better. He went outside, looked at the cloud, and saw not a dragon or a ship, but a funny rabbit in a hoodie. He laughed. And at that moment it seemed to him that the cloud itself smiled back for a second. It didn’t become useful because of that. It became more real. And the Boy understood that he had just done something very important: he had added one more rabbit to the world. And because of that, the world became richer by exactly one magical rabbit. And that is the most real miracle of all.
