THE POEM ‘SUMMER’ BY VYACHESLAV KAZARIN
REVIEW


‘Summer’ is one of Kazarin’s most concentrated, luminous and cosmogonic poems. It is short, yet it contains an entire system: light, a palm, a road, Svarog, scales, the cosmos, time, memory, warmth. It is synonymous with:
•    a mystery of light,
•    a cosmogonic gesture,
•    a sacred ritual,
•    a score of natural acoustics,
•    and, as a text, stands at the intersection of Russian and world poetic traditions.

And from Sun to Sun –
                Solar Expanses.
… the silver of Polesye –
                Svarog’s grey hair.
The Road stretches out
                rom the palm of my hand
                along the warmed Wall…

SUMMER




LINE 1: ‘And from Sun to Sun — the solar Vesi [solar expanses].’
This immediately establishes a cosmogony of light.


What is happening in this line
• the movement ‘from Sun to Sun’ is not physical, but ontological: from light to light, from centre to centre.
• ‘Vesi’ — Slavic-Aryan spaces, solar worlds.

Kazarin’s distinction

LINE 2: ‘… the silver of Polesye — Svarog’s grey hair.’


What is happening
• ‘the silver of Polesye’ — the luminous texture of the earth,
• ‘Svarog’s grey hair’ — sacred cosmogony, ancestral heritage, wisdom, time.

This is a union of earth and cosmos, as seen in the works of:
• Andreev (‘The Rose of the World’)
• Klyuev
• Eastern mystics

But for Kazarin, this is not mythology — it is the poetic physics of light, the radiance of the world of Yavi.



LINES 3–4: ‘The road stretches / from my palm / across the warmed wall …’
This is one of the most powerful images in the poem.


What is happening
• the road = a ray of light;
• the palm = the source;
• the wall = the surface of the world;
• warmth = the energy of life, vitality.

The source of the path lies in the palm. It is a gesture of creation, as in Tsvetaeva, but one of light rather than tragedy.

• Tsvetaeva — the palm as a gesture of fate.
• Rilke — the gesture as the cosmos.

Kazarin’s distinction
For him, the palm is not a gesture of pain, but a gesture of light.



LINE 5: ‘… beneath my palm — SUMMER’
This is the culmination.


What is happening
• Summer is not a season, but a state of light.
• Summer, like the projection of warmth from the palm onto a wall – the surface of the world – that is, man appears as a creator, a maker and a builder, thus generating Light.

This is pure ontology of light, as found in the works of:
• Rilke [the inner sun],
• Tagore [light in the palms],
• Pers [summer as a cosmic element].

But for Kazarin, Summer is not a metaphor, but a physical energy – alive, here and now.



THE MAIN MEANING OF THE POEM


‘Summer’ is not a description of the season. It is a mystical act in which:
• the palm of the hand is the source of directions, destinies, the path,
• the path leads to the light,
• the light is Summer,
• Summer [Slavic-Aryan: leta, timelessness, infinity] is the cosmos [Slavic-Aryan: kosmy, the multiplicity of the world of Yavi],
• the cosmos is Svarog [ancestral gods],
• Svarog is sacred awareness within time,
• time is a state of universal radiance, life, warmth,
• warmth is life.

This is a poetic formula:
Palm ; Road ; Light ; Summer ; Cosmos ; Time ; Life
