What the Islamic World Really Gave to Humanity
The stereotype of a «savage religion that only wages war» sticks around because people hear about the conflicts, but almost never hear about the science, education, and knowledge transfer that were just as much a part of this civilization. I’ve been thinking about this a lot: it’s not that the wars didn’t happen. It’s that reducing an entire era to them means erasing centuries of scholarship. And the facts really do change the picture.
The World’s Oldest Continuously Operating Educational Hub and Its Female Founder
When people say «there was no education in the Islamic world», they forget about Al;Qarawiyyin in Fez. Traditionally associated with Fatima al;Fihri and dating to 859, it is widely regarded as one of the oldest continuously operating higher;education institutions in the world – a status recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records.
It taught theology, yes – but also law, grammar, astronomy, and mathematics. This wasn’t just a small school attached to a mosque. It was a structured educational center with regular instruction and curricula, and it drew students from many different countries.
Think about this for a second: a woman was central to its foundation in the 9th century. At that time, in most of Europe, women simply didn’t have the institutional capacity to fund or establish a major educational project. That detail always hits me hardest. It shows what kind of society it was – one that could support a vision like that.
Women’s Rights in the Islamic World: Formal Protections Ahead of Many Contemporary Societies
We’re often told that women in the Islamic tradition had no rights at all. But the legal and social practices of the 8th–13th centuries tell a different story – and it’s a story that stands in sharp contrast to the status of women in much of Europe at the time.
; Right to property and inheritance. Under Islamic law, a woman had the right to personal property and to inherit a specified share. She could sign contracts and manage her own affairs independently. In much of medieval Europe, a married woman’s legal identity was effectively merged with her husband’s. Her property became his, and she had little to no independent decision;making power.
; Right to education and teaching. Women could study, attend lectures, transmit knowledge, and even serve as teachers and transmitters of hadiths. For example, Aisha bint Abu Bakr was one of the most important transmitters of hadiths, and her authority was widely recognized. Another striking case is Karima al;Marwaziyya in the 11th century: she was regarded as a foremost authority on al;Bukhari’s Sahih, and male scholars traveled specifically to study with her. Women could issue ijazas (teaching licenses) and lead sessions.
; Financial independence. The marriage gift (mahr) belonged to the woman, and the husband couldn’t dispose of it without her consent. It served as a form of economic protection that felt genuinely progressive for its time.
Of course, access to education and the enforcement of these rights were unequal, as in most societies of the time, and varied widely across regions and eras. But in the legal plane, Islamic frameworks in the early Middle Ages granted women more formal rights in property, education, and finance than most women in Europe enjoyed then.
Revolution in Access to Knowledge: Paper, Libraries, and Hospitals
Two infrastructural breakthroughs made the scale of Islamic scholarship possible.
; Paper and libraries. The Islamic world quickly adopted paper production (learned from China) and built enormous libraries. This dramatically lowered the cost of books and accelerated knowledge dissemination. Without this, the massive translation movement and the spread of science would have been impossible. Libraries became engines of scholarship: they preserved texts, supported research, and enabled the circulation of ideas across vast distances.
; Hospitals (bimaristans). In major cities like Baghdad, Cairo, and Damascus, public hospitals were established with specialized wards — including surgery, ophthalmology, and even psychiatry. Treatment was often free and available regardless of religion or wealth. These institutions kept medical records, trained students, and included pharmacies. This model strongly influenced the development of European hospitals and medical education.
These weren’t isolated improvements; they were parts of a system that made knowledge both accessible and practical.
How Europe Rediscovered Antiquity
Here’s what really breaks the myth that «they created nothing»: Europe rediscovered ancient science largely through the Islamic world.
In Baghdad, under Caliph al;Ma’mun in the 9th century, the House of Wisdom (Bayt al;Hikma) was a major center where Greek, Persian, and Indian texts were systematically translated into Arabic. Many original works by Aristotle, Hippocrates, Galen, Euclid, and Ptolemy were lost in their original languages. We have them today largely because they survived in Arabic translations and commentaries.
Later, in the 12th–13th centuries, these Arabic texts were translated into Latin in Toledo and other centers, including Sicily. That’s how the science of the European Renaissance grew – largely out of Arabic books. It’s not a small detail. It’s a lifeline.
Philosophy and the Relay of Ideas: Averroes and Beyond
The intellectual relay is especially clear in philosophy. Ibn Rushd (Averroes) wrote detailed commentaries on Aristotle that became foundational for 13th;century European scholasticism. This was not mere preservation of texts but their deep reinterpretation and integration into a new scientific framework. It’s one of the best examples of how knowledge was passed forward and evolved further.
Where Algebra, Algorithms & Trigonometry Came From?
The word «algebra» comes from the title of Muhammad ibn Musa al;Khwarizmi’s book, Kitab al;Jabr wa;al;Muqabala. He systematized methods for solving equations and, in effect, established algebra as its own discipline.
And then there’s the word «algorithm». It comes straight from al;Khwarizmi’s name. For me, that’s the most striking part: a single scholar gave us a term we use every day, from coding to data science. He also helped bring the Indian decimal system and positional notation to the wider world. That was a quiet revolution: calculations became simpler, faster, and more accurate, opening the door to much more complex models and computations.
It’s also worth noting that in the Islamic world, trigonometry developed as an independent discipline. Key functions like sine were defined and systematically used, and these results later entered European mathematics. This kind of technical precision underpinned many later advances.
Great Islamic Scholars: Names That Changed Science
Avicenna (Ibn Sina, 980–1037) – author of The Canon of Medicine, which served as a principal medical textbook in European universities for several centuries.
Al;Zahrawi (Abulcasis, 936–1013) – a surgeon and author of Al;Tasrif; he described hundreds of surgical instruments and procedures, many of which stayed relevant until the Renaissance.
Ibn al;Haytham (Alhazen, 965–1040) – considered the father of optics; he was the first to explain how vision works, studied the refraction of light, and applied the experimental method in a systematic way.
Al;Biruni (973–1048) – an encyclopedic scholar who was among the first to attempt calculating the Earth’s radius with high precision.
Omar Khayyam (1048–1131) – a mathematician and astronomer who advanced the theory of cubic equations and contributed to one of the most accurate calendars in history.
These weren’t just local figures. Their works were genuinely used in European universities and shaped the development of global science.
Science as a Multinational Project
The scientific centers of Baghdad, Cairo, and C;rdoba were multinational and multi;confessional. Arabs, Persians, Syrians, Jews, and Christians worked there. They were united by Arabic as the language of science and by a shared culture of knowledge exchange. It created an open intellectual environment where different traditions mixed and strengthened one another.
The Relay of Knowledge
The Islamic world in the 8th–13th centuries served as the main scientific bridge between antiquity and Europe. It preserved the heritage of the ancient world, advanced mathematics and medicine, established educational institutions, and passed this knowledge onward.
Islamic scholars built on Greek, Persian, and Indian legacies, systematized and expanded them, then passed the torch forward through translations in Toledo and Sicily and through cross;cultural exchanges. Europe, in turn, further developed these ideas and returned new scientific tools to the world. This is the «relay of knowledge»: different regions, in different eras, became leaders and passed their achievements forward. No civilization did it alone.
These facts don’t erase wars and conflicts – every major civilization experienced them. But reducing an entire culture to violence alone means ignoring a vast body of science, education, and intellectual exchange that still influences our lives today. From algorithms to medical textbooks, the traces are everywhere. And it also means ignoring the fact that, at a time when women in Europe had almost no formal rights, Islamic legal systems provided mechanisms that granted women considerable autonomy in property, education, and finance.
