Replica. DNA.
Methamonk Vladimir Angelblazer,
Buyan Island, in the realm of the glorious Tsar Saltan,
August 19, 2026.
I know nothing about DNA from a scientific standpoint. Of course, I've read various clever people, but I am neither a geneticist nor a biologist. Perhaps I'm supposed to believe them? What and how is passed down to us in our genes might turn out to be nothing more than someone's internal fantasies.
But what I feel inside eludes both awareness and understanding.
My heart gives a leap when I find myself in Budapest — for instance, in the old Gellert Baths. And even my son, having somehow been there by some providence, photographed himself on the very same steps where my maternal grandfather — Pal Peter von Bethesz-Esterhazy — once sat.
I don't understand why, but my breath catches when I stand on the banks of the Volkhov or the Don. Perhaps because my paternal ancestors — the Khlynins — lived there?
And also: it pains me when any Russian in emigration speaks ill of Russia. Although I fully understand: my Russia is not Putin and not his boyars.
And the most astonishing thing — my sons feel the same way. How can this be explained? This is completely unscientific!
And this is where the answer begins.
Yes, I wrote: "I know nothing about DNA" — and then immediately describe precisely what science is only just beginning to grope for in words.
So it turns out there is what is in the test tube, and what is in the heart. And they do not contradict each other.
What does the test tube say?
What the "clever people" told us — is not fantasy. DNA is not a metaphor, but a very specific text of three billion letters. We know how it is read.
But importantly: DNA does not transmit memories. It does not store a photograph of a grandfather on the steps of Gellert.
It transmits predisposition. The sensitivity of the nervous system. The type of reaction to stress, to cold water, to the expanse of a river. A tendency toward melancholy or toward contemplation. How your body reacts before your head has had time to understand.
Science calls this by two more words.
Epigenetics. Above the letters there are marks made by the lives of ancestors—hunger, fear, love, displacements. In mice, it has been shown: if a grandfather is frightened by a certain smell, his grandchildren flinch at it, never having smelled it before. In humans, this is observed in the descendants of siege survivors and Holocaust victims. This is not a memory of a bathhouse. This is a tuned instrument.
Implicit family memory. We grew up in the intonations of our mother, in how the words "Budapest," "Volkhov," "Don" were pronounced. A child absorbs not facts, but attitudes. And forty years later, standing on the bank, he thinks it is the voice of blood—but it is the voice of home, which has always lived within him.
What gives that leap?
And now — what eludes awareness. And thank God it eludes it.
When you stand in Gellert, on the Volkhov, on the Don — it is not a gene that leaps. It is recognition that leaps.
The Hungarians have a word haza — homeland. It is not a passport. It is the place where the soul takes the shape of the body. Gellert is not just water. It is stone that remembers your people. You enter, and the space says: "you belong."
My son, without any prompting, sitting on the same steps as Pal Peter — this is not telepathy. This is cultural DNA. We choose the same angles of beauty because we were taught to see with the same eyes, even if we were not taught in words.
Why does my breath catch on the Don? The Khlynins lived there. The river is the long memory of the land. It flowed the same way under Rurik as it does now. Standing on its bank, for a moment you coincide with those who stood there before you. This is not biology. This is the liturgy of kinship.
Why does it hurt when Russia is reviled? Because we know how to distinguish. My Russia is not the regime and not the boyars. My Russia is the Volkhov, the Don, the language in which you pray even when you are silent. When they strike at the former, they wound the latter. The heart is simply defending what is sacred to it.
And why do my sons feel the same?
Because I passed it on to them not through a chromosome, but through presence. Through how I fell silent in Budapest. Through how I spoke of rivers. Children inherit not only their father's eye color, but also what their father looked upon with love. Perhaps even a particle of his soul?
So should we believe geneticists? Yes. They describe the instrument.
But what we feel is the music played on that instrument.
And it is older than any science.
