6 line Completion of an Obligation 29 Gate

29 Gate of Commitment

Line 6 always answers the question: “What becomes the outcome of the experience we have lived through?”
Here, the line answers the question: “How can I recognize that an obligation has already been fulfilled and can be released?”

MORNING TUNING-FORK CALIBRATION

Canonical text: “For binding, rope and cord are used. Imprisonment in a thicket of thorns. For three years nothing is obtained. Misfortune.”

When a living yes no longer supports movement, a person may try to preserve the former course through duty, promises, and additional effort.
Rope and cord replace the connection that has been lost: the obligation holds us where life is already moving onward.
The thicket of thorns reveals the consequences of this restraint.
Every movement begins to cause pain because the energy can no longer follow its nature freely. It is spent struggling against the bonds and preserving a form that has already completed its function.
“For three years nothing is obtained” describes a prolonged, barren cycle.
While energy remains bound by a former obligation, it cannot return to its natural direction.
The way out appears not through another effort, but when the holding ceases.

Image of the line — a ball that is no longer being held underwater
Submersion does not deprive the ball of its buoyancy.
While it is held underwater, its natural force of return remains within it and accumulates tension.
When the holding ceases, the ball does not need to be rescued, shown the way, or given an additional push.
It rises to the surface by itself because of a property that belonged to it all along.
To discover the nature of its own unsinkability, the ball had to be submerged.
The experience of obligation allowed a force to reveal itself that could not have been recognized at the surface.

Tone of the line: Liberating
Liberation occurs neither through struggling against the obligation nor through denying the experience that has been lived.
The line recognizes that the obligation has already fulfilled its function, stops holding what has reached completion, and allows the energy contained within it to continue its own movement.
Where it is felt in the body: Hands, shoulder girdle, and chest
Holding may be felt as tension in the palms and fingers, rigidity in the shoulders, pressure on the chest, or the constant need to exert force so that something remains in its former place.
When the obligation is completed, the grip loosens.
The shoulders stop carrying a burden that is no longer necessary, the breath becomes freer, and the energy previously directed downward into holding begins to rise and spread through the body.

Frequency octave: Indecision — Commitment — Devotion

Indecision keeps a person within an obligation that has already reached completion. The living yes has outgrown its former form, yet the person hesitates to recognize that the obligation has been fulfilled.
Commitment allows the obligation to be lived through fully and recognizes the moment when its function has truly been completed.
Devotion remains faithful to the living movement of the yes. It does not hold on to a completed course and allows the released energy to follow its nature.

Shadow — Indecision
Indecision keeps a person within an obligation that has already reached completion.
The living yes has ended, but the former course continues to be held in place by a promise, a sense of duty, responsibility, or fear of the consequences.
The more clearly life attempts to move in another direction, the more effort is required to preserve the obligation.
Energy becomes bound in a struggle against its own nature, and every movement within that bondage causes new pain.

Gift — Commitment
Commitment allows an obligation to be lived through fully and recognizes the moment when its function has truly been fulfilled.
It does not demand that the former course continue after completion, nor does it devalue the earlier yes by declaring it a mistake.
When we stop holding the completed form in place, we restore the energy’s ability to move according to the properties revealed through experience.
Completion becomes not a violation of Devotion, but the fulfilment of the obligation’s entire cycle.

Siddhi — Devotion
Devotion remains faithful not to the former form of the obligation, but to the living movement that the obligation was meant to support.
Completion therefore does not violate Devotion. It liberates Devotion for further movement.
Submersion reveals what could not have been known on the shore.
The abyss neither destroys nature nor creates it anew. It makes visible the force of return that has always been present within it.
When the holding disappears, life returns to the surface without further instruction.
Agreement with the experience becomes direct knowing: depth cannot take away the natural direction of what is alive.

Social role — Observer
The Observer sees the entire course of an obligation: its beginning, its usefulness, its trials, and the moment of its completion.
The Observer does not demand endless loyalty to a form merely because it was once chosen.
Their maturity helps others distinguish between betraying an agreement and recognizing the natural completion of its lifespan.
The Observer shows that released energy does not disappear. Enriched by the experience it has lived through, it returns to the greater flow.

Distinction of the line:
29.1 — enters the unknown and distinguishes the present situation from a habitual response formed by earlier experience.
29.2 — discovers within danger the small movement that the body can genuinely make now.
29.3 — stops acting when continuation leads away from the living present and into the abyss of the future.
29.4 — finds an accessible way through which agreement can already enter life and be transmitted to others.
29.5 — creates sufficient support and stops filling the abyss once the necessary function has been restored.
29.6 — completes an obligation that has fulfilled its function and discovers the natural direction of the energy released from it.

Body button — “Am I holding the ball underwater?”
When fulfilling an obligation requires more and more effort, I think about continuing it and about the possibility of completing it.
I imagine the obligation as a rubber ball that I am holding underwater with my hands. I observe my body while imagining the depth of the submersion and the effort required to keep the ball there.
- What do I feel in my solar plexus?
- Are my fingers clenching?
- How are my shoulders held?
- Can my chest move freely as I inhale?
- Do I feel pressure, heaviness, or cloudiness in my head?

- What happens to my breathing when I imagine that I stop holding and pressing down?

Then I imagine simply opening my hands.
Releasing the ball in my imagination does not require me to abandon the obligation immediately.
I stop adding internal pressure and observe: where does the energy move by itself when it is no longer held down by the force of obligation?

What happens to the energy:
While an obligation is sustained through effort, the energy is divided.
One part seeks to follow its natural direction, while another is spent suppressing that movement.
When the obligation is completed, the internal resistance ceases.
The force that previously held the energy in an unnatural position is released and joins its natural upward pull.
The deeper the submersion has been, the more clearly the impulse of return reveals itself.

Reference points:
- Continuing the obligation constantly requires additional physical and emotional effort.
- Pain arises not so much from the experience itself as from the need to preserve its former form.
- Releasing control brings relief to the body before the mind has found a new solution.
- When the holding ceases, the energy discovers its own direction.
- The abyss that has been traversed reveals a property of our nature that could not have been discovered while remaining on the shore.

Phrase of the line:
A fully lived experience reveals properties of our nature that could not have been discovered before entering the abyss of stress.

Formula of the Gate:
When I agree to enter an experience, I remain faithful to the living movement of my yes, follow the course fully enough for it to reveal the properties of my nature, and complete the obligation when its function has been fulfilled.
