Abstract
The Unique Author Code [UAC] is an interdisciplinary system for establishing authorship, based on documenting the creative process and generating a structured digital identifier for the work. Unlike traditional models, which focus on the end result, the UAC records the creative process, ensuring verifiability, transparency and independence from institutional intermediaries. This article analyses the conceptual foundations of the UAC, its technological architecture, legal applicability and potential for integration into international creative industries.
1. Introduction
The modern digital environment is characterised by the rapid production of content, the global accessibility of materials and a growing number of creators. In these circumstances, traditional mechanisms for protecting intellectual property face a number of limitations: they record only the final product, do not reflect the process of its creation and often require the involvement of external intermediaries.
The Unique Author Code (UAC) offers an alternative paradigm: authorship as a process, rather than merely a result. This makes the system relevant to music, literature, the visual arts, film, game design, scientific research and engineering.
2. Theoretical Foundations of the UCA
2.1. Authorship as a Process-Oriented Concept
There is growing interest in process-oriented models of creativity within the international academic community. The UCA is based on the idea that proof of authorship should include:
• the initial creative impulse,
• intermediate versions,
• drafts,
• analytical notes,
• the evolution of the concept.
This approach is consistent with contemporary research in the field of digital archiving and the replication of creative practices.
2.2. The structural model of UCA
The UCA consists of two interrelated levels:
• the public form — an open identifier accessible to platforms and the audience;
• the private form — an archive of evidence containing artefacts of the process.
This structure strikes a balance between openness and protection, making the system applicable in an international context.
3. UCA’s technological architecture
3.1. Digital identifier
The public form of the UCA is a four-character code that can be embedded in:
• file metadata,
• a work’s profile on the platform,
• a QR code,
• a digital certificate.
3.2. Sub-Archives as a Basis of Evidence
The restricted part of the UCA includes:
• audio and video rough cuts,
• text drafts,
• graphic sketches,
• analytical documents,
• timestamps.
This structure is compatible with international standards for digital archives and repositories.
3.3. Integration with platforms
The UCA can be integrated into the ecosystems of:
• music services,
• art galleries,
• literary websites,
• academic repositories,
• game engines.
This level of compatibility makes the UCA technologically scalable.
4. Legal Applicability
4.1. Compliance with international standards
UCA does not require any changes to legislation. It operates within existing legal frameworks because:
• it records the date,
• it records the author,
• it records the process,
• it provides verifiable evidence.
Courts in most countries accept digital evidence provided it is consistent and verifiable — UCA fully meets these criteria.
4.2. Interaction with existing standards
The UCA complements, but does not replace:
• DOI — academic publications,
• ORCID — researcher identification,
• ISWC — musical works,
• ISNI — authors and performers.
The UCA adds the missing layer — procedural evidence.
5. Interdisciplinary applicability
5.1. Music
UKA records:
• drafts,
• MIDI versions,
• scores,
• the audio evolution of a piece.
This makes the system particularly valuable for composers and sound designers.
5.2. Literature
Drafts and revisions of texts form a natural sub-archive.
5.3. Visual Arts
Sketches, rough drafts and interim versions provide ideal evidence of the creative process.
5.4. Film and animation
UCA records the stages of production: script, storyboard, editing.
5.5. Science and engineering
UCA documents the journey of an idea from conception to publication or patent.
6. International Perspective
6.1. Global Applicability
The UCA is culturally neutral and can be implemented in:
• Europe,
• North America,
• East Asia,
• South America,
• India,
• Australia,
• the Middle East.
6.2. Potential for standardisation
Thanks to its simplicity and technological compatibility, the UCA has the potential to become the de facto international standard for establishing authorship in the digital age.
7. Conclusion
The Unique Author Code is an innovative, interdisciplinary and technologically mature system for establishing authorship, focused on documenting the creative process. It complements existing international standards, providing authors with independence, verifiability and transparency. The UCA has the potential to become a global tool for creative identification in the context of a rapidly evolving digital culture.
Recommendations for further research
• analysis of the implementation of the UCA in different countries;
• development of an API for digital platforms;
• establishing an international UCA register;
• studying legal case studies on the application of the UCA;
• integrating the UCA into educational programmes.
