AN ANALYTICAL REVIEW OF VYACHESLAV KAZARIN’S ‘COMODNY’ GENRE
A structural, conceptual and cultural analysis
of the author’s ontology
1. Subject of analysis and methodological framework
The ‘Komodny’ Genre is a system devised by Vyacheslav Kazarin, constituting an ontology of self-generating creativity, in which a work arises without a specific purpose, is fixed in its original form and preserved as an element of creative memory.
The analysis is conducted along four lines:
• structural and conceptual analysis,
• cultural comparison,
• philosophical interpretation,
• empirical verification through published albums.
2. The structural foundation of the genre: six principles
The ‘Comod’ genre is based on six principles clearly formulated by the author:
1. Absence of purpose — the work is not intended for the stage, publication or professional production.
2. Self-generating nature — creativity arises ‘of its own accord’, as an inner impulse.
3. Aesthetic completeness — the work is a fully-fledged opus, not a draft.
4. Initial recording ‘as is’ — the recording is made using whatever means are to hand, without rehearsals.
5. Oblivion — the work proves to be unclaimed and is tucked away in a ‘drawer’.
6. Publication without alterations — when retrieved from the drawer, the original version remains unchanged.
This structure makes the genre a self-sufficient ontology, rather than a variant of a musical style.
3. Distinction from the Singer-Songwriter Genre: an analytical comparison
The Singer-Songwriter Genre is a genre based on:
• purpose,
• communication,
• the stage,
• professionalisation,
• media logic.
The ‘Drawer’ Genre is the antithesis of this system:
• the absence of a purpose,
• the absence of audience orientation,
• the absence of a professional trajectory,
• the absence of the stage as an essential element.
Thus, the ‘Comodny’ Genre is not a branch of the ‘Author’s Song’, but rather represents an alternative model of creativity that is not embedded within the cultural industry.
4. Cultural uniqueness: the absence of equivalents
An analytical comparison shows that no existing cultural form matches the ‘Commodity Genre’ in terms of its combination of characteristics:
• sketches — are unfinished;
• drafts — are not intended for publication;
• lo-fi aesthetics — a stylistic choice, not an ontology;
• outsider art — focused on self-expression;
• composers’ archival finds — require editing;
• field recordings — document the creative work of others.
The ‘Chest of Drawers’ Genre is the only system in which:
• the work is complete,
• it arose without a purpose,
• it was recorded in its original form,
• it was forgotten,
• it was published without alterations.
This makes the genre culturally unique.
5. Philosophical interpretation: creativity as an event
The ‘Chest of Drawers’ Genre can be interpreted through the lens of the philosophy of process:
• Bergson — creativity as duration;
• Deleuze — creativity as becoming;
• Whitehead — the event as the primary unit of being.
A ‘komodny’ song is an event, not a product. It captures a moment of subjectivity that has not been transformed into a commodity or a media object.
This makes the genre significant for:
• the phenomenology of creativity,
• the ontology of subjectivity,
• the philosophy of art.
6. Empirical evidence: four albums
The ‘Dressing-table Genre’ has been empirically confirmed by Kazarin’s four albums:
• Orange,
• Purple,
• Aquamarine,
• Coral.
Each album:
• consists of ‘chest-of-drawers works’,
• is recorded in its original form,
• is released decades later,
• demonstrates aesthetic completeness,
• complies with the ‘Chest-of-Drawers Genre’ document.
These albums serve as empirical evidence of the genre’s existence as a cultural practice.
7. The significance of the genre for an artist’s self-realisation
The ‘Dressing-table Genre’ resolves a key problem in creative culture:
how an artist can fully realise themselves, free from the pressures of the market, the stage, the audience and professional standards.
It allows one to:
• create honestly,
• create freely,
• create without fear,
• preserve one’s inner truth,
• publish works without distortion.
This makes the genre important for:
• creative psychology,
• cultural therapy,
• the author’s identity.
8. Prospects for the development of the genre
The ‘Chest of Drawers’ Genre has the potential to spread into:
• the digital humanities,
• authors’ archives,
• platforms for original creativity,
• cultural movements,
• philosophical research.
It could form the basis for:
• new creative communities,
• new digital platforms,
• new forms of cultural memory.
Conclusion
The ‘Komodny’ Genre is a unique authorial ontology that combines:
• the integrity of the creative impulse,
• the primal nature of form,
• archival memory,
• the philosophy of becoming,
• cultural freedom.
It represents a new type of creativity that is not embedded in the industry, yet is capable of transforming the cultural paradigm. The ‘Chest of Drawers Genre’ is Kazarin’s contribution to the philosophy of art, cultural studies and digital culture, deserving of further academic study.
