Still a Fool
My friends all lean towards the gripe.
They climbed the ladder, earned the stripe –
And me? I'm still a fool.
I never wrote a verse for them,
I never shone their diadem,
I never kissed the hems of them –
Just stayed outside the rule.
Time rolled on like a friendly sun,
Flew like a sparrow – ragged, won.
You grew your connections one by one –
I just watched you pass.
I never wanted your kind of trade,
Never agreed to be afraid.
Now I count the price I paid –
Free, and that's the glass.
Every line I say's a bid,
Every question – a lid.
History plus chemistry – forbid
It make a simple mess.
Now here are the bald spots, clear and true,
Sins too tall to walk into.
My account shows "nothing major" – a clue:
Digital emptiness.
Time rolled on like a friendly sun,
Flew like a sparrow – ragged, won.
You grew your connections one by one –
I just watched you pass.
I never wanted your kind of trade,
Never agreed to be afraid.
Now I count the price I paid –
Free, and that's the glass.
Well then, my friends of silent sorrow,
My friends who run the office tomorrow –
Such is the hand I had to borrow,
Such is the part I play.
You won't recall me, not a bit,
Won't turn your eyes where I once sit.
And that three-volume book I writ –
"He puffed it all away."
Time rolled on like a friendly sun,
Flew like a sparrow – ragged, won.
You grew your connections one by one –
I just watched you pass.
I never wanted your kind of trade,
Never agreed to be afraid.
Now I count the price I paid –
Free, and that's the glass.
Time rolled on like a friendly sun,
Flew like a sparrow – ragged, won.
You grew your connections one by one –
I just watched you pass.
I never wanted your kind of trade,
Never agreed to be afraid.
Now I count the price I paid –
Free, and that's the glass.
Free, and that's the glass.
