Telegram: https://t.me/bodymanualJC
Buried Cities: Methamonk Vladimir Angelblazer Responds
September 23, 2026. Denman Island, British Columbia, Fillongley Provincial Park.
I am writing these lines on Denman Island. In the evenings I gaze into the endless starry sky over the strait. It is crisscrossed by airplanes and satellites, but there is something else too — starships changing direction at tremendous speed. This year there are far more of them in the night sky than last year. I have questions, but whom can I ask?..
Nevertheless, today Methamonk Angelblazer responds to a question from the well-known alternative historian John Connor — Telegram: https://t.me/bodymanualJC
John does very important work. He looks at history from an alternative point of view, and he has thousands of followers. We are all troubled by the same question:
“Is there a database of so-called buried cities? In Leningrad and Moscow, in Czechoslovakia, and across Western Europe, we see buildings with buried ground floors. Even Venice—not merely buried, but standing in water on piles! What happened to our humanity? Why do historians hide it? Why do politicians avoid it? It wasn’t aliens who buried us, was it!?”
Yes, such a database exists. Only in official scholarship it is called something dull: the archaeological map of the cultural layer and urban stratigraphy. And the phenomenon has been studied inside and out.
What seems like a single worldwide cataclysm is actually three completely different processes that we conflate into one.
1. WHY THE FIRST FLOORS WENT UNDERGROUND
In Leningrad, Moscow, Prague, Paris, and Vienna, the picture is the same.
a) The city grows upward. A city lives for 300, 400, 800 years. All that time, the street accumulates: construction debris, manure, ash from stoves, debris from fires, soil for levelling. The level rises by 1–2 cm a year. In 200 years, that is already 2–4 metres.
This is not a hypothesis. It is an archaeologist’s tape measure.
On Tverskaya Street, the cultural layer is 3.6 to 5 metres thick. Within the Boulevard Ring, 2–4 metres. In the Kremlin and Kitay-Gorod, 6–8 metres. In Veliky Novgorod, up to 9 metres, with an average rate of about 1 cm a year. In London, up to 25 metres, and in Paris, up to 20.
The old house does not go anywhere. Its plinth, which in 1730 was level with the pavement, by 1890 is already half a storey below the new road.
b) Cities were deliberately raised. After fires and floods, it was cheaper to fill in the street and raise it than to demolish a stone building. In Moscow—after the fire of 1812. In Petersburg—after the floods. One flood alone, on November 19, 1824, raised the Neva 421 cm above the ordinary water level. After blows like that, the city was literally raised anew.
Hence the windows in the ground, the bricked-up arches, the doors leading nowhere. This is not a buried house. It is a former first floor that became a basement.
c) The fashion for semi-basements. In the 19th century in Russia and Austria-Hungary, building a high plinth with windows for servants, kitchens, and shops was the norm and a mark of status. From the street it looks as if the house is buried, but according to an 1880 design, that was exactly the intention.
2. BUT WHAT ABOUT VENICE?
Venice is proof of the opposite. No one buried it. It was built in the water from the beginning.
The lagoon is silty; there is no solid ground. The Venetians drove millions of piles of larch, oak, and alder into the mud—nine per square metre, in a spiral. The tops were sawed off below sea level, a wooden platform was laid, and on that—stone. In oxygen-free mud, wood does not rot; it petrifies. It stands for a thousand years.
If you imagine all this was done at once, it is impossible. But no one built Venice at once!
Why go into the water? Not out of a good life. After 402, when the Visigoths took Rome, and then Attila’s Huns passed through northern Italy, the population fled into the lagoon. Water became a fortress wall. First fishermen’s huts, then villages. The city grew for a thousand years.
Where did the timber come from? There is no forest around Venice. All the timber was imported. The Republic created a logistics empire.
Timber was floated down from the Alps along rivers, as in Russia along the Volga: larch and spruce from Cadore along the Piave, firs from the Asiago plateau along the Brenta, timber from Lessinia, Verona, and Tyrol along the Adige, oak from Treviso, Friuli, and Istria. And from the 10th century—continuously from Dalmatia, from the territory of Croatia and Montenegro. These were raft caravans of 20–30 logs, moving downstream. From the 13th century, Cadore was obliged to supply Venice with timber in exchange for autonomy. A state program lasting 500 years.
What does that mean in numbers? Estimates range from 7.9 to 15.8 million piles beneath the historic centre. Most often, 10 million is cited.
Divide by time. The city was built from 421 to 1797—1,376 years.
10,000,000 / 1,376 = 7,267 piles a year. That is 20 piles a day.
For a power where up to 16,000 people worked in the Arsenale at one time, that is not a volume. One crew with a manual pile driver drives 3–4 piles a day.
Beneath St. Mark’s Campanile — about 100,000 piles. Beneath the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute — 1,156,650. Beneath the Rialto Bridge — 12,000. But the Salute was built over 56 years. To drive a million piles in 56 years is 50 piles a day for the whole city.
Ten million trunks is about one cubic kilometre of forest. Over a thousand years, the Alps easily gave that up. That is precisely why by the 18th century Cadore and Istria had been almost completely cleared. It is the ecological footprint of the miracle.
Where did they get engineers? They were not imported. They grew up there. The guilds — Arti. Piles were driven by battipali, carpentry done by marangoni, stone laid by mureri. The technology was already known to the Romans.
Venice is not a miracle of one night. It is a thousand-year construction site where every day one house and twenty piles were added. And the Piave River brought new logs down from the mountains every day.
3. REAL BURIED CITIES
They exist, and no one hides them. They are proud of them.
Derinkuyu and Kaymakli in Turkey — cities for 20,000 people, descending 85 metres, eight levels, carved into the tuff.
Skara Brae in Scotland — a Stone Age village buried by a dune. It was found by a storm in 1850, which stripped the sand from the dunes of the Bay of Skaill. It is a UNESCO site.
Pompeii and Herculaneum — buried under 15–20 metres of Vesuvian ash.
Tells — artificial hills up to 40 metres high in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and the Balkans, built from the remains of mud-brick houses that lived on top of one another for millennia.
Historians do not shout about this because for them there is no sensation in it. It is a routine part of urban archaeology. Politicians avoid it for the same reason they avoid sewage. It is not a conspiracy. It is municipal history.
IT SEEMS WE HAVE REACHED THE FINAL PART OF THE ARTICLE: THE FOREST UPSIDE DOWN…
And this is where the most mystical part begins!
We are used to thinking that a city is buried. But in fact the city buries itself, layer by layer, the way a tree adds rings. The cultural layer is not dirt. It is a chronicle. Ash from a hearth where a family warmed itself in 1147. A horseshoe lost by a coachman on Tverskaya in 1812. A shard from the pot of a Novgorod child.
We walk on the roofs of the past. Literally.
And Venice is the most beautiful image of this. Beneath the most idle, most light-hearted city on water lies an inverted forest. A whole forest from the Alps, driven in with roots up, crowns down. Millions of trees that never saw the sun, yet hold palaces on their shoulders.
But this is only the upper layer.
We answered the question. But the answer did not close the subject—it opened a door.
How many more cities sleep beneath the fields? How many villages lie on the bottom of the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea? How many layers have we not yet read?
Every year scanners strip away the jungle—and Maya cities emerge beneath it. Sonar scans the bottom — and finds sunken ports. In the centre of Moscow they dig a foundation pit — and pull out a coin that should not be there. Somewhere beneath Venice there still lies a pile stamped by a woodcutter who felled it in 1300. We will never know his name. But he holds up a palace.
Historians do not hide mysteries. They themselves walk down a dark corridor with a lantern. The light catches one shard, one wall, one pile—and beyond it, darkness again. Perhaps beneath every city lies another city. And beneath that—another? And we stand on the roof of the uppermost one, not knowing how many floors down there are.
I look here, on Denman, into the sky, where incomprehensible lights race, and I understand: we look up with the same amazement with which future archaeologists will look down at us.
It is not a conspiracy. It is an endless book that humanity writes itself, layer by layer. We have only just learned to read its first pages.
We are not victims of a flood. We are the ones who learned to build a raft out of timber and sail through a thousand years.
But where we are sailing — that has not yet been written.
And that is the most interesting part.
