I know, dear gull, the sorrow that you bear…
O gull, you are the queen of all the sea!
I, too, feel sorry for the bygone years…
Let us drown our grief beneath the sea!

The steel-grey waves will take it in their embrace
And carry it to distant shores away!
And perhaps the angels, high in heaven’s grace,
Will hear my prayer and penitence today?

I pray to God to grant me His forgiveness!
For long, in disbelief, I pined away…
And now my soul is filled with deep distress;

We must praise the Lord by night and day!
