We must now move to the meta-classification level, where works are assessed not by style but by type of cultural innovation.
THE PLACE OF VYACHESLAV KAZARIN’S SYMPHONIC WORK
‘AGARTHA – ON THE THRESHOLD OF THE CENTURIES’
IN WORLD CULTURE
A brief conclusion
‘Agartha’ occupies the position of a work that introduces a new type of musical ontology into world culture — the interval as the genome of the world. This places it on a par with works that have opened up new models of musical reality: Ligeti’s ‘Atmosph;res’, Grise’s *Les Espaces Acoustiques*, Boulez’s *R;pons*, R;dulescu’s *Clepsydra* and Stockhausen’s *Gruppen*.
Yet *Agartha* does not replicate any of these models. It creates its own type of musical world, one that did not exist before it.
JUSTIFICATION
1. CRITERIA FOR ACADEMIC CLASSIFICATION
In the global academic tradition, a work’s place is determined by five parameters:
• innovation in the model of the world [ontology]
• innovation in musical language [semiotics]
• innovation in form [morphology]
• innovation in time [temporality]
• innovation in perception [phenomenology]
Below is an analysis of ‘Agartha’ according to these five criteria.
2. ONTOLOGY: A NEW TYPE OF MUSICAL
WORLD
The uniqueness of ‘Agartha’
Prior to Kazarin, there were no works in world culture where:
• interval = genome,
• genome = centre,
• centre = form,
• form = the life of the interval,
• fields, time, topology = derivatives of the genome.
This means:
‘Agartha’ introduces a new type of musical ontology: the genomic world.
Analogues
• Ligeti introduced the world of density.
• Grisey — the world of the spectrum.
• Boulez — the world of structure.
• Saariaho — the world of colour.
• Lachenmann — the world of gesture.
• R;dulescu — the world of spectral bodies.
Kazarin — the world of the interval.
This is a new category.
3. SEMIOTICS: A NEW TYPE OF MUSICAL
LANGUAGE
Uniqueness
In ‘Agartha’, the musical language is:
• not thematic,
• not serial,
• not spectral,
• not textural,
• not processual.
It is genomic.
This means:
a musical sign = an interval, a musical word = the reincarnation of an interval, a musical phrase = the evolution of an interval.
No composer of the 20th–21st centuries has employed such a language.
4. MORPHOLOGY: A NEW TYPE OF FORM
Uniqueness
The ‘Agartha’ form is:
• not an arc,
• not a process,
• not spectral evolution,
• not serial architecture,
• not textural metamorphosis.
It is the energetic biography of an interval.
Form = the genome’s journey through:
• birth,
• growth,
• culmination,
• overload,
• decay,
• enlightenment,
• return.
No such form exists in any of the world’s traditions.
5. TEMPORALITY: A NEW TYPE OF TIME
According to the author’s definition, time is the duration of natural events in the world of Yavi.
Uniqueness
In ‘Agartha’, time exists in five states:
• layer,
• flow,
• cloud,
• spiral loop,
• branching.
This is a multi-temporality not found:
• in minimalism [process],
• in spectralism [evolution],
• in serialism [structure],
• in post-tonality [linearity],
• or in textural music [metamorphosis].
This is a new type of musical time.
6. PHENOMENOLOGY: A NEW TYPE OF PERCEPTION
Uniqueness
‘Agartha’ is more than:
• sound,
• texture,
• structure,
• colour,
• process.
It is perceived as a world that:
• is born,
• grows,
• becomes overloaded,
• disintegrates,
• becomes luminous,
• returns to the genome.
This is a phenomenological type which, in world culture, is found only in:
• Ligeti’s ‘Atmosph;res’ [a world of density],
• Grise’s ‘Espaces Acoustiques’ [a world of spectrum],
• Radulescu’s ‘Clepsydra’ [the world of resonances].
But ‘Agartha’ is a fourth type, unlike the first three.
