Первый можно бы назвать национализмом; по мнению националистов, все страны уступают их собственной во всех отношениях и должны почитать за счастье господство над собой. Другие страны всегда неправы, менее свободны, менее цивилизованны, не столь прославлены в сражениях, вероломны, склонны поддаваться безумным и враждебным идеологиям, каких не воспримет ни один здравомыслящий человек, не религиозны и вообще ненормальные. Такие патриоты встречаются чаще всего; их патриотизм – самое поганое, что есть на свете. Второй вид патриота проще всего описать, вернувшись к генералу Фуэрте. Он не верил в «моя страна, права она или нет»; наоборот, он любил родину, видя отчетливо все ее промахи и изо всех сил стараясь их исправить. Он часто высказывался в том духе, что человек, поддерживающий страну, когда она явно неправа, или не видящий ее недостатков, – худший из предателей. The first kind one might call nationalism; nationalists believe that all other countries are inferior in every respect and that one would do them a favour by dominating them.
