First volume
Rodoman B.B. Areas and Networks. Essays of Theoretical Geography. – Smolensk: Oecumene, 1999, 256 p.
The mankind needs both urban civilization and nature to exist peacefully
in each region in order to survive. Geography deals with spatial aspects of ecology. Theoretical geography provides the experts with simple and clarified models of space. In this book, geographical objects are interpreted as spatial areas and networks. The ideas are shown by the cartoids – the symmetrical drawings resembling geographic maps.

«Polarized biosphere», or «Polarized landscape» was a project, designed by the author in 1970, in order to use theoretical geography for harmonious coexistence of People and Biosphere. Large city and wild nature are regarded as equivalent poles of environment. Different functional zones are placed in between. The very concept and its applications to environmental protection, recreation, tourism, city planning and transportation policies for the entire World, this country, Central Russia, Moscow city and region are characterized in the book. The ideas are shown by the cartoids.

Dear Richard!
My works in the theory of regionalization, which I had wrote and published in 1954 – 1967, have not met with understanding from the Russian geographers and cartographers. Unfortunately I have not disciples and followers in this matter. Therefore further working for the theory of regionalization became impossible for me. However, I received my defended thesis on this topic and used it in my direction of theoretical geography, reflecting the unique characteristics of Russia. All my articles known by you form part of my monograph (1999) and/or were republished in collections of my writings (2002, 2007). Since 1983, I had not relevant publications in English. I am enclosing summaries with this letter and tables of contents of three my books. I will send you some cartoids later.
Sincerely yours,
Boris Rodoman
