11. Twenty years of romance make a woman look like a ruin; but twenty years of marriage make her something like a public building.
      После двадцати лет романтических приключений женщина похожа на руины,  но если она двадцать лет замужем,  то она — монументальное сооружение.

12. The only thing that one really knows about human nature is that it changes.
       Одно мы знаем точно про природу человека — она меняется.

13. Anyone can sympathise with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathise with a friend's success.
      Неудачам друзей сочувствуют все, но только утончённые натуры радуются их успехам.

14. Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live: and unselfishness is letting other people's lives alone, not interfering with them.
      Эгоизм — отобранное у других право на свой мир, а альтруизм — это нежелание вмешиваться в чужую жизнь.

15.  Of course, America had been discovered before Columbus ,  but it always been hushed up.
       Америку открыли до Колумба — все об этом знают, но вслух не говорят.

16.  Men know life too early; women know life too late-that is the difference between men and women.
     Мужчины слишком рано познают жизнь, женщины  слишком поздно — вот и вся разница между ними.

17.  All sympathy is fine, but sympathy with suffering is the least fine mode.
     Сострадание прекрасно, но сочувствовать и страдать одновременно – это уже слишком.

18. If you pretend to be good the world takes you very seriously. If you pretend to be bad it doesn't. Such is the astounding stupidity of optimism
         Если притвориться хорошим, то тебе поверят,  но если плохим, то едва ли. Оптимизм невероятно глуп.
 
19. Life is not governed by will or intention. Life is a question of nerves and fibres and slowly built-up cells, in which thought hides itself and passion has its dreams.
     Жизнь — это вовсе не идеи и желания. Жизнь — это просто нервные клетки с волокнами, в которых спрятаны мысли, страсти и грёзы.

20. Women, as someone says, love with their ears, just as men love with their eyes, if they ever love at all.
         Говорят, что женщины любят ушами, а мужчины — глазами, но, в случае с мужчинами, любовью это назвать трудно.
