At one point a couple came in, a man pushing a woman in a wheelchair.

They were both dressed in threadbare clothes, the woman with a filthy blanket over her legs and on her lap a boombox with a plastic flower taped to the antenna.

They looked like they were probably homeless, as they appeared windblown and weathered by the sun. Both had rotten teeth.

I guessed that they were in their mid-fifties, but I was shocked when the man listed his birth year as 1964, the same year as mine.

I wondered what had happened in their lives that they had ended up in such circumstances.

I’m no spring chicken, as they say, but I certainly don’t look like they did.

 I walked around pain-free, whereas they looked like they both had many health issues.

I could tell from the way they talked and the way the man clenched his jaws that their teeth hurt.

I guess I’m doing OK in comparison.

I’ve been having this ongoing conversation with myself about who I am and what I want out of life.

I think when I left Mormonism, for a few months not much changed.

I was still living the same “standards” of Mormonism, and then one day a coworker brought me a caramel latte and said, “You can drink coffee now, can’t you?”

I tried it and liked it, and probably out of fear,
I didn’t tell my wife I had tried it.

I suppose you could call me a social drinker because I didn’t drink coffee very often, but I did enjoy it.

My boss in Houston sometimes took me over to Starbucks to have a management meeting over a mocha, but that was about it.

 Since I moved back to Utah, I haven’t had any except for having a cup to wake myself up on the way to Texas to pick up my son.

I don’t feel guilty about drinking coffee. The proscription is a purely Mormon thing, and it doesn’t make much sense for me to live by teachings I don’t believe in.

But it is rather childish to hide my indulgence from my wife, as if she were some nannies watching over me.

So, even though I’m 44 years old, there’s still a very immature child inside of me, one who is afraid of disappointing other people.

So here I am an old child.

It doesn’t make me feel good to realize that.

 But I’m growing up, hopefully.
