Last night I was driving my kids home from the store, and I mentioned how beautiful it was here in Utah.
The sun was setting over West Mountain, and with the leaves changing on Squaw Peak, the mountains were bathed with what my old Scoutmaster used to call Alpine Glow, where everything is a shade of brilliant orange that, true to the name, positively glows.
“Isn’t that beautiful?” I asked.
“Ugh. I hate those mountains,” my daughter said. “You can’t see the sky.”
“But the mountains are beautiful,” I persisted.
“Dad, you were just telling me how green Texas was when you were there last month.
“It was green, and it is beautiful there. It’s just different.”
“Yeah, they have all those oak trees,” my son chimed in. “All the trees here had to be planted, so they’re fake.”
So, we drove home, the kids convinced that we’ve moved to a barren wasteland.
But much has changed in the last year.
Everyone is more settled, and my kids seemed almost excited to start school this year, a vast improvement over last year’s resignation, doom, and gloom.
It is beautiful here, and Texas is beautiful in a different sort of way.
I suppose the trick is to appreciate where you are in life.
I think the kids are getting there,
though they still hate the scenery.
