English translation

Apollon Maikov
Art

I'd cut off stems of the reed for myself at the sea-coast.
Silently lay they, forgotten, in my poor shelter.
Seen was this reed by a venerable old man, – a night guest
Who was a stranger to our place godforsaken.
Carved he holes in the cane, to the mouth he put it, –
All of a sudden the liven up reed started singing, –
As at the sea-coast it is when a zephyr is blowing,
Rippling the waters and touching the reed accidentally, –
Filling the near-shore with soothing reports generated.

Original text:

Filling the near-shore with gentle and mellifuous sounds.
