Autumn
Sweeping are winds through the drear
Autumnal woodland;
Yellow leaves are tumbling
Down with a whisper.
Gardens and fields grew deserted,
Hills look offended;
Bushes and trees became silent, –
Birds disappeared.
Geese, being late, are to hurry
Towards the south, –
There in the kingdom of heaven
Smooth is their flying.
Fogs rolling in from the river
Came to the valley;
Mixed with smokes of the village
Up they are rising.
Gazing around, a vagrant
Stands at the hilltop;
He is observing the Autumn,
Sighing with sorrow.
Vagrant, don't be so deplorable!
Nature is wilted
Just for a little period, –
It'll be revived, –
And will appear in flowers,
Proudly smiling;
And it again will get gorgeous
Bridal attires.
Ah, it's not true for a mortal!
There an old man
Badly in spring feels his winter
Of feeble living.
Original text:
В мрачной дубраве;
Поле и сад опустели;
Сетуют холмы;
В тихой долине;
Только на малое время;
Все обновится весною;
