Runtu: Not much to tell. I’m now in my 70s, have way too many kids, and live in the Washington, DC, area. I write for a living, but unless you consider technical writing creative, this is the only creative writing I do. Recently, I published an article in The Human Prospect and a book chronicling my experiences as a Mormon missionary in Bolivia.

That night I once again started taking the “vermifuge,” (worm flush) the red medication that was supposed to get rid of the worms.

I was supposed to take it before going to bed. The red crap, as we called it, had two ingredients: castor oil and some kind of paralytic drug.

Intestinal worms attached themselves to the walls of your intestines, and the vermifuge would paralyze the worms so that they would let go off your intestines. The castor oil acted like a laxative to purge the paralyzed worms.

The medicine was so awful that I would have to alternate teaspoons of it with cups of soda. Taking the medicine made mornings interesting. I would wake up and immediately must run for the bathroom, meaning I would have to run across the balcony, down two flights of stairs, across a courtyard, up a flight of stairs, and to the back of the yard.

After the first morning, I slept in my sweats and tennis shoes to give myself a fighting chance of making it to the bathroom.

Being as sick as I was, I couldn’t really do much missionary work, which was perfectly fine with Brock, who preferred practicing his charango and making doughnuts. Brock told the members that we would always be at the chapel at 4:00 on Thursdays, so if they knew anyone who wanted to hear the gospel, they knew where to find us.

In 16 de Julio was officially a ward, but attendance wasn’t much better than the little branch in Villa Adela: perhaps 20-25 members a week.

The landscape in 16 de Julio was pretty much like Villa Adela, though the town was on a slope where the altiplano began stretching up toward Huayna Potosi, the peak that towered above the bleak slums.

Above us was Alto Lima, the only area in the zone considered worse than 16 de Julio; up there they had the “half-chapel,” which looked like someone had chopped a small chapel in half.

The front half, with the podium and some pews, had been finished, while a temporary wall had been put where the rest of the chapel would go, with reinforced steel bars protruding from the unfinished shell.

In 16 de Julio, we met in a recently built chapel that was spare by American standards, but by far the most opulent building in the town.

When people would ask us where the chapel was, we would tell them it was around the corner from the “Pino,” the only tree in the town.

Very little grew between the two- and three-story plastered buildings, and the streets alternated between dusty and deep with mud.

After church the first Sunday, Brock said we needed to go to the market to buy more lard.

I said I wasn’t going shopping on the Sabbath, but I followed him down to the crowded marketplace, the white makeshift umbrellas over the stalls whipping in the cold wind, the sun bearing down on my face.

When we got home, I realized I was badly sunburned, not having been outside in the sun for a few days.

 I read my scriptures while Brock made more doughnuts and practiced his songs. “You know you’re going to have to sing with me at the talent show.”
“Not on your life,” I said, by this time thoroughly disgusted with him.
“You are no fun at all,” he said.

The next day was P-day, so we went downtown to get some saltenas, the spicy meat empanadas they sold everywhere. We ate our saltenas and orange juice, and then headed to the post office to pick up a couple of packages from Aduana (Customs).


We handed our tickets to the girls who worked there (who not coincidentally were wearing BYU and Utah State sweatshirts), and they retrieved the packages from a large bin. They opened my package, which my mother had helpfully marked as “used clothing,” and proceeded to estimate the value of the beef jerky, Hershey’s kisses, and zip-loc bag full of peanut butter.

We paid our taxes and took our packages.

Today we were going to the Mercado Negro (the Black Market), the steep, winding street crowded with blue-awninged kiosks, so narrow at some points that one person could barely squeeze between the vendors hawking everything from Sony stereos to dried llama fetuses.

We were buying humbler fare: an envelope of Tang, some Raisin Bran, and some Lucky Charms. Then we headed to the Furnisses’ house in Cala Coto for Elder Lamont’s birthday party. The cake was better this time; Sister Furniss made it. We watched “Rocky III” and then before it got too late, caught a bus back to 16 de Julio.

It was after 11:00 and bitterly cold when we stepped off the bus.

 We had walked about half a block when someone stepped from the shadows; it was Elder Choque, a new missionary from Tupiza. Alone, he said nothing, so I asked him right away where his companion was.

“I don’t know, and I don’t care,” he replied. He explained that he had made a dental appointment in the morning, and his companion, Elder Finn, had refused to go with him.

The argument had escalated, and they had come to blows. So, we deposited a clearly shaken missionary at our house and began the long walk up the mountainside to Alto Lima.

Choque’s companion, Finn, was one of those people who was always trying to outdo everyone else on their weekly goals.

On our way to zone meetings, Brock would make up numbers, but he would adjust them upward past Finn’s numbers just to piss him off. At the missionaries’ house, we woke up the landlady, who told us to be careful because Elder Finn was very angry.

She seemed to be afraid of him. When we knocked on the door, a still-agitated Finn told us that if he ever saw his companion again, he would “tear his head off.”

I asked Brock to stay with Finn for the night, and then I walked back home and talked to Choque late into the night. This wasn’t the kind of mission he had in mind.

In the morning, we took a bus to the zone leaders’ house, and I explained the situation. They decided that Choque would stay with them and Finn with us until they could arrange for transfers.

A few days later, I was back with Brock, and he made a batch of doughnuts before we left to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremonies on television.

As I walked through a blinding snowstorm, I knew that my brother would be going to the event in a limousine with his girlfriend, while I was going to be sitting in a dark room in Bolivia watching the blurry images on an ancient TV.

The next few days we did virtually nothing, as Olympic coverage was on TV all day, and Brock wanted to watch. Oddly enough, we had three baptisms that Sunday, not really through any effort on our part.

On P-day we had lunch at Mister Mac’s, a hamburger shop run by one of the more prominent Mormons in La Paz. The zone leaders told me I had been transferred to Tarija, where I would be working with Lewis, who was sitting at a table across the room. I had heard he was kind of crazy, but surely, we couldn’t do worse than I had the last month.


After lunch we went to the airlines to get tickets. The next flight was the day after tomorrow, and Brock said, “You can’t leave yet. I’m not going home for three more days. I might get into trouble if you’re not here. Besides, you must sing with me in the talent show.”

“You’re on your own,” I said. “If you get into trouble, that’s your problem. I’m going to Tarija.”

We stopped by Dr. Donoso’s that afternoon, and he told us he had tickets to the football game between Wilstermann and The Strongest the next day. Brock was pretty much done with missionary work and said he would love to go.


I figured I might as well go, too. So, in the morning, we took a taxi to Dr. Donoso’s office, where he told us that his ticket connection had fallen through.


So, instead, he took us to lunch at a posh restaurant called La Suisse, where white-gloved waiters served food from silver platters. It looked like something from an old movie, not like a small cafe just half a mile from some of the poorest slums I’d ever seen.

After lunch, Dr. Donoso told us he had bought movie tickets, so we walked over to a theatre on a steep street a few blocks from the American embassy.

The poster read, in English, “Stephen King’s Christine,” which was a film about a 1958 Plymouth that had somehow become possessed by an evil spirit (I’m not kidding). It was rated R, and I told Brock I wasn’t going in.

He smiled and said, “Look, if you don’t go in, I’m going to find some girl and get into trouble, and it will be partly your fault for leaving me alone.”

I went in. All during the movie, I bemoaned my descent into rule-breaking and faithlessness.

I wrote in my journal, “From now on, I’ll try to keep all the rules and regain the spirit I have lost.”

I was glad I would be getting on the plane tomorrow.
