My first day in Bolivia, I finished my journal entry by saying, “Our bautismo goal is 17 this month. I think we can do it.”

Beck told me that El Alto was one of the most “fertile” areas in all of Bolivia.

 Everyone who worked there baptized, and we would be no exception. He already had several promising investigators lined up for baptism, and I would be there to seal the deal. But things didn’t go so well the first few weeks.

Almost every day I wrote about “citas” (appointments) that fell through, and by the next week I was writing in frustration about the “SLOW” work: “Nobody will listen to our message. I wish they could understand how important it is. The only thing positive today was that we taught Hermana Galarreta how to make onion rings.”

We had three baptisms scheduled for that Sunday, though none actually happened.

I had brought my baptismal clothes to church so we could go straight from church to the stake center, so Hermana Lopez, who felt sorry for me, told me I could baptize her son, Omar, who had just turned eight.

I didn’t know what we were doing wrong. Beck had told me about baptisms he and his previous companion had done, but I’d never met any of these people. Strangely, none of them ever came to church, and we didn’t make too much effort to find them.

That was the branch’s job, we had been told. The work continued to be unsuccessful, and we amused ourselves by telling jokes to each other while we walked up and down, knocking doors.

At one house, we could see a cow behind the gate, so Beck turned to me, giving a modified “mini-charla”: “Nuestro mensaje es bien importante para usted y su vaca (our message is very important for you and your cow).”

When a woman finally opened the gate, we were laughing so hard we just walked away. The next day’s journal entry simply reads, “Today sucked.” That Sunday, we had our first baptisms, a man named Morgan and his wife Leticia.

Leticia slipped going into the water, and I fell in with her.

“They are pretty excited about the gospel,” I wrote. At least we weren’t going to be on the zero page.

We finally figured out why things were going so poorly. Bread was being rationed, so most people were not home but were standing in bread lines. Missionary work is tough when people are concerned about how they’re going to get their next meal, and by the middle of the next month, April, we were starting to get worried. But we found out that our branch’s resident polygamist had a 9-year-old son who had not been baptized, so Beck baptized him, and I confirmed. At 9, you got to consider it a convert baptism.

But then things got interesting. We were teaching eight investigators and had challenged them all to be baptized on the same day, April 22. Seven of them showed up to church, and one teenage girl whom we had taught a couple of discussions to came and asked if she could be baptized that day, too.

We baptized the three kids we’d been teaching, three teenagers we had been teaching together, Morgan and Leticia’s niece, and the girl I mentioned. Eight baptisms. I wrote, “It was pretty cool. I was as happy as I’ve been since I got here.”

Leticia took a photo of us and said she was going to blow it up and put it on the wall with an inscription: “Because of these two elders, I am what I am today.” The next week we baptized an elderly man and two young children.

As we walked home, the two children, Beatriz and Javier, held my hands. It felt pretty good. That made 12 baptisms for the month. Nowhere near the Rocky Box, we were still pretty respectable.

At church the next Sunday, the branch president announced the baptism and “handed out the baptism certificates, but nobody was there, so we were unhappy about that.” But we felt better knowing that we were baptizing four more people that week: two pre-teen sisters and their younger cousins. We baptized six that month.


One day in June, Beck’s final month with me, we went out to knock on some doors, and we discovered a two-block stretch of houses we had missed. The first house we got into we were yelled at by a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and then a couple of doors down, a small, middle-aged man opened his door and welcomed us in.

We sat down and began the discussion, and every time we asked a question, he would say, “We believe what you are teaching.”

After the discussion, his wife took a pot down off a shelf and ladled out room-temperature milk with chunks in it. We choked it down and agreed to come back the next day.

Each discussion was just like the previous one: they accepted everything we said, expressing faith in the restored gospel. And of course, we got the chunky milk every time.

After they accepted the challenge to be baptized, I asked the man, Gregorio, why he had accepted everything we had taught him. He told me that he and his family had been through some terrible times, having been involved in a serious bus accident.

One morning, in desperation, the family had knelt down together and pleaded with God to send someone to help them. A few hours later we showed up.

We all took it as a sign that God wanted this family to be baptized, and a year later Beck and I visited the family and discovered that they were still active, Gregorio serving on the high council.
