The most complicated and mature language embodies the highest level of civilizations across time and history. It is how we view and remember events, a lingo to record the world around us. Here we stand for the history of Russian literature in Australia. This prose represents Australian citizens who still enjoy writing in the mother tongue of their Russian heritage. Anyway, this Russian-speaking literature belongs to Australian Modern Culture and flourishes equally alongside its Anglo-Saxon counterpart. The previous background of writers is pleasantly mixed with the new style of life they experience in Australia ". / http://www.proza.ru/diary/yuri2008/2020-01-11 / Iouri Runtu: French : Rudolf Noureev : La Mort a Paris / Юри Рюнтю : Russian / Uri Runtu: English Yuri Ryuntyu / Celebrities RU : the Neo-transcendental theatre : 2022.

Runtu / http://proza.ru/2023/11/17/1271 / the Frankenstein switch on the wall : the USA
Tuesday was shower day, and I needed one.
After a week in El Alto, I felt like I had dust in every pore and crevice.
My nose was sunburned and peeling (why hadn’t they told us to bring sunscreen?), and my glasses started looking like they’d been sandblasted.
We knocked doors all morning and found only one interested person.
This young guy with a large nose and bulging eyes invited us in to talk with him and two other young men.
They listened attentively while we discussed the Savior.
This was in the days when the church decided that the best way to combat the idea that we weren’t Christians was to avoid talking about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon until the third discussion, which of course was the magic “baptismal challenge” discussion in our mission.
The first discussion covered our faith in Jesus, and the second discussed the Mormon Plan of Salvation.
The result was often that even people who made it through two discussions would send us away thinking that we weren’t much different from the Catholics and Protestants.
We taught the discussion and told the three guys that we knew Jesus lived and had died for our sins.
No sooner had we finished than they launched into an argument about whether the Sabbath was on Saturday or Sunday; turns out they were Seventh Day Adventists.
The disadvantage for us was that the Spanish word for Saturday literally means “Sabbath.” We again bore our testimonies and left.
After another dismal lunch, Elder Beck asked Hermana Galarreta if there were any way we could eat something different once in a while. She brought out some recipe cards illustrated with bright photos.
“Sure, elder, just pick something from these cards, and I’ll make it tonight.”
First Beck chose fried chicken, but she told him that it was impossible to find chicken in the market. She begged off on several other dishes, which she said were too difficult to make.
Finally, Beck settled on a beef pot pie, which looked easy enough.
She asked, “How do you make this?”
“It’s just like any other pie,” said Beck.
After we left the Galarretas’ we dropped off our dirty clothes at Hermana Lopez’s house. A cheerful and energetic woman in her late twenties with three small children, she invited us in for poppyseed cake and cocoa.
Heaven knows we were still hungry after lunch. Her husband, Antonio, was the elder’s quorum president in the branch. An air traffic controller at the airport, he was also an alcoholic.
He would go months without drinking, but then would show up late after work, and he would usually beat up Hermana Lopez on those occasions.
As she poured the cocoa, she told us that the last time he had beaten her, she had suddenly realized something: he was drunk, and she wasn’t.
She said, “I just started hitting and clawing and scratching until he was lying on the floor, bleeding. The next morning, I told him if he ever tried to hit me again, I’d kill him.” When we finished our cake, we headed off to the plaza to catch the bus.
This time we rode the ENTA, the government-run bus, which was a Mercedes bus that was tall enough for me to stand up straight.
The usual “micro” buses were so cramped that even at 5; 8; tall, I had to hunch over while standing in the bus.
Often the buses would be so crowded that people would stand with one foot on the bottom step, holding on for dear life to the outside of the bus.
Once I was standing at the bottom step, holding onto the stair railing, most of my body outside when I saw that the bus was coming perilously close to a telephone pole. I ducked inside as far as I could and just missed the pole.
The student standing next to me wasn’t so lucky. He hit the pole at perhaps 25 miles an hour and was knocked off the bus and into the cobblestone street.
The bus driver didn’t stop.
We arrived at the hermanas’ house in Ciudad Satelite, and Beck immediately went into the bathroom to take a shower.
I was a little jealous of the hermanas, who had run water and a telephone. But they slept on miserable beds made of hay bales sewn inside flour sacks.
Hermana Clark was still unconscious on the floor. In the daylight, she looked near death to me: her eyes were dark ringed, and her cheeks sunken, but she looked oddly peaceful.
For a moment I wondered if I was going to end up like that.
I talked with the hermanas for a while. Bryan was from Salt Lake, and she was still grieving for a brother who had died while she was in the MTC.
Somehow living in El Alto with a deathly ill companion was probably not helpful for her grieving.
Thomas, her other companion, was a quiet girl from Idaho who looked like her spirit had been broken long before; she said little but gave everything of herself to the work.
I learned later that she had been abused throughout her childhood.
Beck finally came out of the shower and showed me how to use the electric shower head.
First you turned the water on, and then you stepped back and threw the “Frankenstein switch” on the wall.
You could then adjust the water flow to get the right temperature, but you had to make sure that you didn’t touch the faucet with wet hands, or you might get electrocuted.
The same was true of the shower head; 220 volts were heating the coils inside, and if you touched it, they might heat you.
The shower was kind of scary, but it felt so good.
I wore flip-flops in the shower because we had been told that certain parasites could enter your body through the soles of your feet if you showered barefoot.
I never was sure if that was true or not.
We took the bus back to Villa Adela and went back to work, knocking doors until dinner time. We were both looking forward to dinner.
Finally, something other than stew.
The first course was, as usual, french-fry soup, but then Hermana Galarreta came out of the kitchen, beaming, as she carried a golden pie.
She set it down and said she hoped we enjoyed it.
Beck picked up his knife and cut into the pie. But something was wrong.
The top crust looked kind of strange, and it was quite soft.
“Oh, crap,” said Beck. “Do you know what this is?”
No, I couldn’t guess.
“It’s meringue,” he said. “It’s a meat meringue pie!”
Indeed, it was.
Beck carefully scraped the meringue off to reveal underneath it the same vile stew we’d been eating since I got there.
“Didn’t you follow the recipe?” he asked Hermana Galarreta.
“I can’t read,” she said, nearly in tears. “You said it was just like any other pie, so that’s how I made it.”
It was time to find another cook, we agreed.
