In a surprise move, Hillary Clinton named retired boxer Rocky Balboa her new campaign strategist to replace longtime advisor Mark Penn.

Sources close to the campaign indicated that Balboa wasn’t her first choice. “She really wanted Mickey, Rocky’s first manager.

 ‘I really liked what he did with the chicken chasing. Genius!’ She was disappointed to hear that he was dead. Then she said, ‘What about that Apollo Creed fellow? What our campaign really needs is that Eye of the Tiger mentality.'” Creed was also unavailable, being dead.

“I’m thrilled to announce Mr. Balboa’s decision to join our team,” said an ebullient Mrs. Clinton, standing at the top of the stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “I said last week that I would not stop until we’ve climbed these stairs, and who better to help me than the man who did it over the course of six films.”

Mrs. Clinton noted Rocky’s resilience:

“Look at the beatings this man has taken. Apollo Creed broke his ribs and almost blinded him. Clubber Lang nearly killed him. And that Russian guy. Yikes! And who can forget the emotional toll that has been visited on this man: a comatose wife, and then the deaths of two managers and his beloved Adrian. And yet he’s still here, fighting. That’s the kind of campaign I want to run.”

Balboa approached the podium and gave brief remarks:

“Thank you very much. I don’t know. Wh - What do ya say to something like this? About thirty years ago … this city… really took me inside, you know? And I want to thank you very much for that. I really do. And I’ve been thinking that, uh, I wasn’t gonna bring this up, but I might as well now. I would never do anything to hurt this sport that has been so really good to me. And I’ve been talking it over with my manager… We think that…  It’s really hard to say this. I feel like, well… I am thinking maybe it’s time that I should, uh, step down maybe and… retire.”

After a stone-faced Mrs. Clinton whispered to him, Balboa smiled sheepishly and said, “Yeah, what the lady said. I’m not retiring. I’m just getting started.”
Asked why he took the job, Balboa responded, “Because I can’t sing or dance.”
Discussing his support for Mrs. Clinton, Balboa paused and said, “I dunno, she’s got gaps, I got gaps. Together we fill gaps.”

Asked what he would say to Barack Obama, Balboa replied, “You ain’t so bad! You ain’t so bad! You ain’t nothin’! C’mon, champ, hit me in the face! My mom hits harder than you!”

Mrs. Clinton beamed, remarking, “Isn’t he great? I wish we’d had him here in the beginning of the campaign.”

Balboa reiterated that he was honored by the candidate’s confidence in him:

“I was nobody. But that don’t matter either, you know? ‘Cause I was thinkin’, it really don’t matter if we lose this race. It really don’t matter if this guy beats her badly, either. ‘Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody’s ever gone the distance with Obama, and if we can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and we’re still stand-in’, I’m gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren’t just another bum from the neighborhood.”

An alarmed Mrs. Clinton took the microphone and nearly shouted, “Make no mistake, we’re in this to win!”

“Oh, yeah, right,” chuckled Rocky.

“I just want Hillary to be able to stand up on Election Night and say, ‘Yo, Bill! I did it!”

After the press conference, actor Sylvester Stallone wondered aloud how and when he would break the news to Mrs.

Clinton that Rocky is a fictional character.

“We’ll see how long this plays out,” he said, smiling. “The deck in my backyard needs refinishing.”
