Coming to Cochabamba was a huge culture shock in some ways. Probably the biggest shock initially was the milk. I know, what’s the big deal about milk? In Bolivia at that time, the only milk you could get most places was Leche PIL, which came in a plastic bag.

 It always tasted to me like it was reconstituted powdered milk, but I couldn’t be sure. Either way, it was hit and miss because you never knew if the milk had been refrigerated.

We would always smell the milk when we opened it to see if it was good or not, good being a relative term, of course; even ice cold, the milk was pretty nasty.

Often the milk came out sour and chunky. Once I splurged and bought a large box of American Raisin Bran, and in my haste, poured a bag of chunky milk all over the cereal. I was crushed.

Milk in Cochabamba was something else entirely. It came in a glass bottle with a foil lid, and it was fresh. You would shake it up because there was always a layer of cream on top.

We had a live-in cook who would prepare a big breakfast of scrambled eggs or French toast or pancakes with a cold bottle of fresh milk. I thought life couldn’t get any better.

Our cook was a woman in her thirties who had, I was told, escaped an abusive marriage in La Paz and had been invited by one of the president’s assistants to cook for us.

She was a wonderful person who made me feel like someone cared about me. When I arrived in Cochabamba, she took one look at me and declared that she was going to fatten me up. I did gain about 15 pounds there; about half the weight I had lost.

 She and her 19-year-old niece lived in a small guest house behind ours. The house was magnificent by Bolivian standards: 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms, hot and cold running water, and a garage. The back yard had a large lawn bordered by roses and a large quince tree.

 Across the back fence was the main road going along the river, where there was a park with a small zoo, so close that we could often hear the lion roaring at night.

But our house was nothing compared to the mission president’s house, which was up in Cala Coto, a rich neighborhood overlooking the Cochabamba Valley with a beautiful view of the city and the lake beyond it.

Their house had a washer and dryer, water purifier, and a large, well-kept yard. One day the mission president’s wife called and said she had heard I knew how to play soccer. Her eleven-year-old daughter wanted to learn, so she asked if I could come up and teach her. So, I agreed to spend an hour or so a day showing her how to handle a soccer ball.

 We drove up to the house, and I went around to the back, where they said there was a large lawn. In the middle of the yard was an enormous black fig tree, and the figs were at the peak of ripeness. I love figs, so I immediately went to the tree and started picking.

“Stop! Don’t do that!” The mission president’s wife screamed from the back door.
“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“Don’t eat those! They might be poisonous!” she screamed, running toward me.
“They’re figs,” I said, shrugging. “And they’re really good ones.”

Within a week, she was making fig bars, and the night watchman was a little miffed that he no longer had exclusive rights to the figs.

Sister Nichols couldn’t speak Spanish, so when she needed to go to shopping, she would call the office, and we would take her to the market. She would give us the list, and we would haggle with the vendors to get what we needed. The cook/housekeeper was a tiny woman named Lydia, who spoke no English, so they sort of communicated by sign language.

Sister Nichols was very kind to us and told us that she felt like the missionaries were her children, her responsibility. At Thanksgiving, we drove up to the house and had a wonderful turkey and stuffing dinner.

I still don’t know where she got the turkey, but it was good. Afterward, I helped her iron out the aluminum foil; you couldn’t buy foil in Bolivia, so you had to wash it and then iron it out to use it again.

On p-days, we would go to Sa-b-or for ice cream. It was located on the corner of the Plaza Colon, a palm-lined park with beautiful fountains in the middle. The store fronted a building full of shops, including the travel agency that we used for missionary travel.

I would often take advantage of the situation to get an ice cream cone whenever I had travel business. Outside the building stood a crowd of “cambistas,” or moneychangers. If you walked down the side street, every few steps someone would approach and ask if you had dollars to exchange.

 Exchanging with the cambistas was illegal, but you always got the going rate, which was always much higher than the official rate, so most missionaries exchanged their money there.

One evening we dropped off some missionaries and then the six of us office missionaries decided to get some ice cream. As we approached the plaza from the Prado, we could smell something acrid and burning: tear gas.

Riot police were everywhere in the plaza, firing tear gas and beating a large crowd of what looked like students. The next day we returned to find all the windows in the building shattered, and the ice cream and travel agency employees were sweeping up glass.

Apparently a group of students had decided that the cambistas were destroying the economy, so they planned a march against them. One of the cambistas had pulled out a revolver and started shooting, setting off mass panic and a riot.

Not long after that, as we were dressing for work in the morning, we suddenly heard the roar of a crowd rushing down our street. Union workers had blockaded the Puente Cobija, the bridge next to the zoo, which was perhaps two blocks from our house.

The police had come and attacked the demonstrators, and when we got out to the balcony, we could see hundreds of people running away from the bridge both on our street and the street behind the house. We usually managed to distance ourselves from the political situation, but it was getting too close to ignore.

We attended the same ward as the mission president, and church there was a surreal experience.

Our ward boundaries included the university, so it was called the University Ward, and it was unlike any other ward I saw in Bolivia.

Most Sundays the building was full, and teenaged Aaronic Priesthood holders prepared and passed the sacrament.

It was an affluent area, so we had little success knocking doors, but we did have a lot of members inviting their friends to church so we could teach them. Each Sunday morning, we would walk the mile or so from our house to the chapel, and along the way, we would cross the Prado, the main street in that part of town.

Every Sunday the Prado would be crowded with young people “dando vueltas,” literally walking in a circle, up the Prado and back again.

For us missionaries, it was like walking through a gauntlet. As soon as someone noticed us, the jeers and whistles would start, and we would be told in no uncertain terms that we were not welcome in Bolivia.

A few times they threw things at us, and more than once someone spat on me. My companion didn’t know any of the Spanish swear words, so he would ask me what they had said. “You don’t want to know,” I would reply, and we would smile and ignore it.

At church we met a young guy named Enrique. Although he was born in Bolivia, he grew up in a suburb of Atlanta and had played football for the University of Georgia. He had come to Bolivia to go to graduate school and to reconnect with his cultural heritage.

 He attended church with his girlfriend, a student from Peru who was a member of our church. He would tell us that his girlfriend wanted him to listen to our lessons, but he wasn’t really interested.

He was just humoring her, but he said we could teach him on one condition: that we teach him in English. I hadn’t realized how much of what I had been teaching had been canned and memorized, but I found it really difficult to teach him the discussions in English. We finally discarded the programmed lessons and just went through concepts and scriptures, and that worked better.

One Sunday we came to church, and Enrique’s girlfriend asked me, “So, when are you going to baptize him?”

I turned to Enrique and said, “I don’t know. When do you want to be baptized?”
He looked at his feet for a second and then said, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that.”

He told us that he had been through 8 or 9 sets of missionaries, but when we bored testimony of the Book of Mormon, he knew that we knew it was true. He said he prayed about it for the first time, and he believed in it.

We baptized him the following week. I thought at the time that, if nothing else had happened on my mission, that was a good thing.

Here was a good man with good prospects who had found the true church of God.
