    QLD : Australia : Queensland’s parliament on March 22, 2017  passed an amendment to the criminal code to remove the so-called “gay panic” defence-homophobic law) for accused murderers trying to reduce their charge to the lesser crime of manslaughter.

     2017 :  “Queensland’s criminal code must not be seen to condone violence against the gay community, or indeed any community,” said in a statement the Queensland’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath. “The passing of this legislation sends an important message that discrimination is not acceptable and that we value the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and intersex) community.”

      South Australia is now the only state allowing the “gay panic” defence.


    Being labelled a homosexual can bring about your death even if you're not one.

     That law is a danger not only to homosexuals but a danger to anyone – anyone can say he made an advance on me and get out on manslaughter.

This morning as I was driving to work,
 I saw a bumper sticker on an ancient

Ford Tempo in front of me:
 
I had to look it up.

I have to admit that I was hoping that her writing would be dreadful so that I could write something humorous, but from what I saw, her writing isn’t atrocious;

I was pleased to see that she’s fairly concise and straightforward in her writing style.

What caught my eye, however, was her description of
a typical day in her life.

I can relate to being stretched to the limit by the demands
of six children (I have six children, too).

Diapers and carpools and Disney videos are all
familiar territory for me.

But what I found almost depressing was the undercurrent of being exhausted and underappreciated.

She says she’s living “the American Dream,” but it sounds more to me like she’s living the dream someone else told her she’s supposed to have.

She apparently would never think of slowing down and taking some time off for herself (and to be fair, I wouldn’t have thought of it either back in my believing days).

Life for her and for a lot of Mormons involves self-sacrifice, which in some strange way is the only way to find joy and fulfilment in life.

Here’s how she describes part of her day:

After I return home, I have 45 minutes to
answer e-mail or complete some other errand or project.

Then it’s a drive to the junior high and
directly on to the grade school.

When we pull up there, I run my fingers
through my hair and dab on a bit of makeup, just in case.

(I’ve learned to carry an extra set in my purse.).

 About this time, I begin to pray that there’s
no reason I’ll have to go in because you know what?

If I didn’t get a chance to exercise—and that happens
 a lot—then it’s likely I’m still in my pajamas!

 Well, so what? Isn’t working at home in your pajamas part of
the American Dream?

Well, it is for this author.


It’s home then, and time for chores, homework, piano practice,
and more errands (and changing OUT of the PJs).

On a good day, I’ll I throw dinner in the oven, hoping my husband
thinks about picking up some bread and fruit on his way home from work.

I usually make time to read at least a chapter from the book I’m reading,
 and having the scriptures on my Palm has greatly increased my scripture study opportunities.

Much is made about how depressed and guilty and overstressed
 Mormon women are, and I am frankly tired of people sneering
at the Prozac-addled masses.

These are real people, and they’ve been taught to have this
life of self-effacement.

Ms. Nunes’s typical day is probably not all that different from other Mormon women’s days, except that she’s trying to cram a writing career into the life of an overworked housewife.

She’s a graphic reminder of what
Mormonism demands of women.

 You can almost feel the bitterness
in her closing remark:

I’m drifting off and then I hear . . .

“Mommy!
