It seems pretty benign if you ask me. One of the worst things about leaving Mormonism is the loss of community. You feel totally alone and isolated, like no one understands you. The billboard seems designed to let people know they aren’t alone (hence the words “You are not alone!”).

 Nonetheless, some Mormons consider this billboard an attack. Some comments:

“I think it’s pretty clear that the OTHER effect of these types of billboards is to perpetuate the “cult” myths out there that create the perception that leaving is like trying to get out of a POW camp.

“Second, read some of the comments attached to the other story and you’ll see another consequence – more hate comments in the public arena.

“The fact of the matter is those of us who live in the area have been subject to the vile words (i.e. all Mormons are podophiles and child rapists, etc.), acts of discrimination (e.g. won’t do business with Mormons, vote against Mormons, etc.), and outright violence aimed at members of the Church.

The timing of this billboard strikes when the wounds are still fresh.

Perhaps I feel justified in my characterization of the ad as “attack [Ing]” my religion because I’m used to seeing ads for truly benign things like car sales and football games.

I don’t view this as benign. On the surface, I view it as a wolf in sheep’s clothing whose implicit effort is to pull people away from the Church or stir up more resentment against it by suggesting that there is a need for their “post-Mormon services” in our community; yeah, leaving Mormonism is on par with Alcoholics Anonymous, etc.

It reduces membership in the Church to a sickness which needs to be addressed. “


All this from four words!

What some Mormons need to understand is that post Mormons do need a support system.

Although some Mormons have told me that leaving the church is the “easy way out,” it is far from easy. It is painful and depressing and sad and scary all at the same time.

Personally, I am grateful that organizations like

postmormon.org exist because I know too many people who have struggled alone without the help they need to get through a very difficult situation.

It isn’t an attack on Mormonism to acknowledge
that people who leave are hurting.
