Every day I would check the mail in the lobby of the dorms,
 but I would come back empty-handed and disappointed.

“I’m telling you, you’re going to Bolivia, or is that O-Bolivia,” my roommate would say, and soon everyone in the dorms told me they had heard I was going to Bolivia.

 My roommate laughed when I told him how quickly the rumor had spread.


One morning he told me he’d dreamed that I was going to Bismarck, North Dakota, and he was going to Fargo.

On my way home from class a few days later, I stopped at the mailbox, and there it was: an oversized envelope with a return address of 50 East North Temple St. in Salt Lake City, the church’s headquarters.

 I walked upstairs staring at it and walked into my room, where my roommate was napping.

“Greg, I got my mission call,” I said shakily.

“That’s impossible,” he said drowsily. “I haven’t put my papers in yet.”

“Not you, me,” I said.

“Well, where are you going?” he asked.

“I don’t know. Let’s see,” I said, carefully opening the envelope.

I read down through the standard greeting until I read that I would be laboring in the Bolivia Cochabamba mission for a period of 18 months. I was to report to the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, on January 5.

I said, “I’m going to Bolivia,” I said.

“No, seriously, where are you going?”

“Really, it’s Bolivia.” I showed him the letter.

“I guess that makes me a prophet,” he said, rolling over and going back to sleep.

I picked up the phone and read the letter all the way through to my mother, who was crying on the other end of the line.

“I’m so proud of you,” she said, and I thought to myself that was the first time in my life I had ever heard her say that.

I skipped my afternoon classes and went to the library and read everything I could find about Bolivia. It was the poorest country in South America, the books said.

 Cochabamba was in the middle of the country, but I couldn’t find much information about the city or how large the mission was.

I realized that I wasn’t disappointed, after all. I was excited to go.

A couple of weeks later Greg and I went to a meeting at the Provo Tabernacle, featuring apostle Boyd Packer.

It was billed as a missionary preparation talk, and Packer went on about how it was our duty to go when we turned 19.

He said that there was no valid reason for delaying a mission, that the Lord would not be pleased if we put it off for even a month.

I felt terribly guilty because I had put off my mission for a couple of months just so I could finish another semester.

After the meeting, Greg wanted to go up and shake Packer’s hand.

 I was sure that he would be able to see right through me; he would know that I had put off my mission, and I would stand there ashamed to be in the presence of an apostle of the Lord.

But Greg insisted, so we waited in line while Packer greeted people. Finally, it was my turn.

“Are you planning on serving a mission?” the elderly apostle asked.

“I just received my call to Bolivia,” I said, waiting for the condemnation that would surely come.

“Well, that’s just fine,” he is smiling,
and then he moved on to the next person.

Maybe the Lord had forgiven the delay
because I was definitely going.
