Every Mormon boy knows he is going to be a missionary when he becomes 19.

 From the time they are three years old, they sing a church song:

I hope they call me on a mission
When I have grown a foot or two.

I hope by then I will be ready
To teach and preach and work
Like missionaries do.

I hope that I can share the gospel
With those who want to know the truth.

I want to be a missionary
And serve and help the Lord
While I am in my youth.

A mission wasn’t really a choice for me.

I was going, and it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t go.

My family had joined with the
 Mormons shortly after the church was founded in 1830.

 My ancestor, Frederick G. Williams, belonged to a Campbellite congregation near Cleveland, Ohio.

One day a fellow church member returned from a trip to upstate New York with exciting news: new scripture had been found.

An angel had appeared to a young man named Joseph Smith and had given him an ancient record written on gold plates.

Smith had translated these plates “by the gift and power of God,” and the translation had been published as the Book of Mormon.

The book told the story of a man named Lehi, who lived in Jerusalem some 600 years before Christ.

 Warned of the coming Babylonian invasion, Lehi had taken his family into the wilderness, and they had eventually crossed the ocean and settled the Americas. Their wars, their prophets, and even the visit of Jesus himself to the Americas–all of this was described in this marvelous book.

Many of the congregation joined immediately, including Frederick’s wife, Rebecca, but Frederick took his time and studied prayerfully over several months.

Eventually he too was baptized into the new church, and within a short time, he had risen to the highest levels of the church becoming the third in command of the movement, running the church’s printing press, and overseeing the construction of its first temple.

Somehow, by the time I was born, the Williams family had lost most of its prominence in the LDS church.

In my father’s immediate family, he was the only one actively involved in Mormonism, and I always thought he did it mostly to keep my mother happy.

Dad’s father was what they called “less active,” and one of his brothers had become a Scientologist.

My older brother had abandoned Mormonism in his teens, so I knew I was going to be the first missionary in our family for generations.

I had been taught my whole life that people in my generation had been “reserved” for the last days before Jesus came. Ours was a particularly wicked time, and we were needed to spread the gospel to all the world, as the Savior had commanded.


But I was something special beyond even that. I had been born with a serious birth defect and had required surgery the day I was born. I spent many nights in the hospital before my fifth birthday.

My mother was convinced I had been saved for some great purpose; I remember cringing as she stood in church, tearfully telling the congregation that I was a child of destiny.

 But inwardly I thought maybe she was right.


At age 12 I started working at a gas station, and I saved all my money. By the time I was 17, I had almost $3,000 in the bank.

Most kids my age would have spent the money on college, or maybe an old car, or something. Not me. This was my mission fund.

 I was proud to say that I was going to pay for my mission myself. I wouldn’t even have to ask my parents for help.

My teenage years were what you might imagine was the perfect scripted Mormon life.

I didn’t drink, didn’t smoke, didn’t do drugs, and was entirely upright in my relationships with girls.

My mother once told me that I had never given her a moment’s grief growing up; and I knew I hadn’t.

But somehow I never felt I was good enough. I knew I hadn’t committed any serious sins, but I was constantly beating myself up over the little things I did every day that I knew I shouldn’t.

At 17 I left for Brigham Young University. Again, it wasn’t something I thought much about. Most of my friends from church were going to BYU, and it just seemed natural for me to go, too. A lot of people in my ward left on their missions, and there was tremendous pressure to go.

A lot of the girls let it be known they wouldn’t date you if you hadn’t been on a mission or weren’t planning on going. That didn’t matter to me because I was going to go, period.

The summer after my freshman year, my friends started leaving for their missions. Alex went to South Africa, Will to Venezuela, and Todd to Ecuador.

I wouldn’t be going until at least the fall, when I turned 19. My best friend Greg, who was three days younger than I was, would be leaving when I did.

 We both agonized over what to do that fall: should we go to school one more semester and leave after Christmas or stay home and leave right after our birthdays. We decided to go back to BYU, where we would room together one last semester.

Right before we left for Utah, we went to the beach at Point Dume one last time of the summer. We hiked down the steep cliff to the rocks and sand below. Our friend Karl brought his girlfriend Cheri, and they made out on the beach while we went out to bodysurf. The surf was as flat as I had ever seen it, with perhaps 10-inch swells, nothing more.

 Greg and I swam out and started talking about how this would be the last time we went to the beach before our missions.

Suddenly the waves became huge and rough, and we found ourselves tossed under the water and scraping on the rocks below. When you get tumbled over and over by a wave, you lose your sense of direction, and it can be hard to find the surface. After one massive wave, I eventually made my way to the surface and gasped for air, but there was no sign of Greg.

What seemed a long time later, his head popped up from the foamy water, and he screamed, “Johnny! Where are you?

We’re going to drown, aren’t we?” and with that we were both tossed under again. Eventually we dragged ourselves to the shore and lay panting on the sand, water draining from our mouths and noses.

“Did you see that?” we asked Karl when we approached the towel where they were still going at it. “We almost got killed.”

“See what?” said Karl, looking out at the now-placid water.

Greg and I decided that someone didn’t want us going on our missions. Satan, we had been taught, had dominion over the waters, and this was just his way of reminding us of his power.

A few days later we were on our way to Provo for school.

A few weeks into the semester, I made an appointment with Bishop Lincoln, a local dentist who led our student ward.

I told him I was ready to submit my application to be a missionary. He gave me the standard interview questions: Was I paying tithing? Did I keep the Word of Wisdom (a church rule prohibiting alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea)?

When he asked about the “law of chastity,” he specifically asked if I had a problem with masturbation.

This was a big deal in Mormonism. Spencer W. Kimball, the president and prophet of our church, had warned us of the evils of this practice:

“Prophets anciently and today condemn masturbation. It induces feelings of guilt and shame. It is detrimental to spirituality. It indicates slavery to the flesh, not that mastery of it and the growth toward godhood which is the object of our mortal life.

Our modern prophet has indicated that no young man should be called on a mission who is not free from this practice. What is more, it too often leads to grievous sin, even to that sin against nature, homosexuality.

For, done in private, it evolves often into mutual masturbation-practiced with another person of the same sex and thence into total homosexuality.”


The bishop reminded me that I could not be a missionary if I were a masturbator. I swallowed and told him that I had once had this problem, but I truthfully told him I hadn’t done so in over two years.

He smiled and said, “You’re doing a lot better than some others I’ve talked to.”

 We filled out the paperwork together.


I would have to have a medical checkup and see a dentist (“I can do that for you,” he cheerfully volunteered).

He gave me a form and told me I needed to go on campus at BYU on a Saturday and take a language-aptitude test. That evening at dinner, I told my roommate and some friends that I was going on a mission.


“You’ll probably go somewhere awful, like Bolivia,” said my roommate.

“That’s like the armpit of South America,” said another friend, laughing.
Secretly I was hoping to go to a German-speaking mission.

 I was taking my second German class at BYU, and I hoped that whoever recommended my assignment would take that into consideration.

But then I had to be honest and wrote down that I had taken four years of Spanish in high school.

Either way, I was sure that the prophet would know where I was supposed to go, and it would be right for me. But I knew I’d be disappointed if I went someplace like Bolivia.

A few days later I was in the BYU Health Center for my pre-mission physical.

They did the usual: blood and urine samples, weight, temperature, blood pressure, and then the nurse practitioner, a woman not too much older than I was, told me to strip down and wrap myself in a sheet so she could do the hernia and prostate checks.

I was horrified to have a woman do that to me, but anything to go on a mission.

A trip to the dentist (Bishop Lincoln, of course) meant I had to have a couple of cavities filled. And then my roommate and I both went to take the language exam.

 I didn’t think it was that difficult (I honestly don’t remember much about what was on it), but he came home stressed and worried that he’d get stuck in a US mission.

Now all the paperwork was done,
and I took the thick file to the stake president,
who grilled me about masturbation and whether
I had done anything “inappropriate” with anyone
of the opposite sex. Satisfied that I was chaste,
 he signed my papers and said he would turn them in the next day.
