QLD : Australia : Queensland’s parliament on March 22, 2017 passed an amendment to the criminal code to remove the so-called “gay panic” defence-homophobic law) for accused murderers trying to reduce their charge to the lesser crime of manslaughter.
2017 : “Queensland’s criminal code must not be seen to condone violence against the gay community, or indeed any community,” said in a statement the Queensland’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath. “The passing of this legislation sends an important message that discrimination is not acceptable and that we value the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and intersex) community.”
South Australia is now the only state allowing the “gay panic” defence.
Being labelled a homosexual can bring about your death even if you're not one.
That law is a danger not only to homosexuals but a danger to anyone – anyone can say he made an advance on me and get out on manslaughter.

I’m finally home from a long trip to Texas to get my son off to his second year of college. It was quite a trip. We left a week ago Friday and spent the first night in Grand Junction, Colorado. We got a late start because, like most college students, my son wasn’t packed and wasn’t ready to go when I was. We packed my compact car full of his stuff (and some clothes for me) and headed out the door. We stopped to drop off some supplies to my college-age daughter and then drove until about 1:00 in the morning.
The next day we drove over the Rockies, stopping in Frisco for lunch. At Denver, the GPS navigation system told me to get off I-70 and take a side highway through town. Soon, we found ourselves driving through Denver on surface streets, which reminded me of lower-rent parts of the San Fernando Valley back home.
We passed a large billboard: “Adult XXX Superstore … It’s cheaper than a date!” It took forever to wind our way through the stoplights and traffic, and eventually we ended up on a rural highway heading southeast toward Kansas.
About an hour later, I saw a road sign that read, “I-70, 10 miles.”
So, we got back on the interstate for a brief ten minutes or so before the map told us to turn off on a highway heading southeast.
Rural Colorado east of Denver is not like you picture Colorado: there are no mountains, no winding canyons, no high passes. The land, though green with fields and pastures, rolls along gentle hills and flat prairies as far as you can see.
The two-lane road had a speed limit of 70, so I thought the navigation system knew what it was doing, at least until it directed us off the main road onto a barely paved road with no center line and no shoulder.
A couple of minutes after bumping along the rough and rutted pavement, my son laughed and asked, “Dad, do you have any idea where we are?” No, I didn’t.
After a roadside potty break (we were the only people on this road) we continued, hoping against all odds that the system was right.
As we crossed into southwestern Kansas, we drove through clouds of bright yellow butterflies, something I had never seen before. It reminded me of a natural ticker-tape parade.
I need not mention that the car was splattered with dead butterflies in short order. We passed a lot of churches, and one that stood out was one outside of Dodge City that read, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.”
To me, that’s a really strange sentiment. Even as a believer I never would have had that bleak an outlook. It’s as if the person is saying that life is so unbearable, he or she needs Jesus just to cope.
In Garden City, I noticed a young girl wearing a shirt that read “Jesus has saved ‘myspace’ for me in heaven.” By the time we reached Oklahoma City, it was 1:00 in the morning, and my friend graciously stayed up waiting for us.
We ended up talking at the kitchen table for two more hours before going to bed.
My son and I slept in and then had a great Sunday brunch with my friend and his family (thank you so much for putting us up), and then it was back in the car to head south towards Texas.
Oklahoma looks very much like the Brazos Valley in Texas, our destination, with its green low hills and oak trees. As you head south on I-35, you pass through OU territory, where everything revolves around boomers and sooners.
Eventually, the hills give way to slightly larger hills, which the locals call the Arbuckle Mountains. Pretty, yes, but these are not mountains in any way.
We crossed the Red River into Texas in the early afternoon, a squat gray adult video store welcoming us to the Lone Star state. By this time, we were listening to Ricky Gervais’ XFM shows and talking about my son’s plans for the year.
Once we approached Waco, the landscape looked pretty familiar. I had driven these roads many times, and I pointed out the place where my car had died in Calvert in the middle of the night. It was really strange driving into College Station and not going to my house.
Instead, we stayed in a motel for a couple of nights.
My son insisted that he wanted to have an apartment to himself, so we looked at everything we could find, but they were all dumps (I told him they looked like crack houses) in bad neighborhoods by the railroad tracks.
With a lot of prodding, I talked him into getting into a student apartment with roommates. He was none too happy, but he’ll survive. It took two more days to find a futon for him and a motor scooter that he could get around on.
I ended up staying with some old friends from our LDS ward there, and I had a nice visit. Their life is much like the one I used to have: church callings occupy their time, they have a son on a mission, and they talk about the blessings of the gospel in their lives.
In all honesty, I’m happy for them; Mormonism works for them, and that’s really fine with me.
I used to wish it worked for me, but then I am happy with my life as it is; Mormonism worked for me for a long time, but it doesn’t anymore, and that’s OK.
I drove past my house a couple of times,
and the renters appear to be taking good care of it.
At least the yard looks pretty good.
I left Thursday and headed back to Oklahoma, where my good friend took me out for a burger and a few beers.
He took me past the Oklahoma City temple, and I asked him if he still felt a little sad (he was heavily involved in the construction of the temple and was temple worker after it opened), and he said he doesn’t really feel much of anything about it anymore.
It’s part of his past, and he is moving on with his life. I want to get to that stage, too, but it is awfully difficult given that Mormonism is part of every day of my life. At least it doesn’t hurt like it used to.
The next morning, I got up early and drove, alone, across the Texas panhandle, through New Mexico and southwestern Colorado into Utah, all the while listening to Great Expectations (read by Hugh Laurie), and when that ended, back to Ricky Gervais.
I picked up my daughter from her apartment, and we arrived home at 2:30 in the morning.
The trip had ended up being three days longer than I had expected, and I am probably in trouble at work.
I had expected to be back to work on Wednesday or Thursday, and when that became unlikely, I asked my wife to call my boss and tell her.
Of course, she forgot, so my boss has no idea what happened to me. I hope I still have a job tomorrow.
In all it was a pretty stressful trip because we had so much to do, and my son was so anxious about everything.
But I think we both survived, and life can go on.
